Jaguars vs. Jets Pick – NFL Week 9

Here is a tantalizing matchup for you guys. The Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Jets square off in a game just about nobody cares about. The Jaguars don’t have fans, the Jets are a bad team again this season, and everybody else doesn’t care either. There are two groups of people that do, though. That is fantasy football players and people gambling on the game. I’m not big into fantasy football, but I suspect if you have a lot of players consisting of players from the Jets and Jaguars then you’re team isn’t doing so well right now. It doesn’t matter though if it’s the Super Bowl or the Jaguars vs. the Jets, there is money to be won on every game. I see an opportunity here and I can going to try and seize the opportunity and win. The Jets’ circus was in full swing last week. Ryan Fitzpatrick suffered an injury to his hand and had to sit out. Low and behold the next man in line was Geno Smith. The Jets probably were hoping they had somebody else suitable to go in place of Fitzpatrick.

Geno Smith was out for the first-half of the season due to getting punched in the face in a fight in the locker room months ago. The Jets are probably hoping that his injury was more severe, because he looked a little lost at times. By looking at his numbers it doesn’t look terribly bad with 2 touchdowns and an interception. But there were many occasions where he made bad decisions and couldn’t get the Jets into a position to win the game. Smith didn’t last the whole game. He took a blow late in the contest and Fitzpatrick actually had to go back in the game with his bum hand. Reports indicate that Fitzpatrick is going to start this one after tearing tendons in his non-throwing hand. Last week he wrapped it up and got back out there. He finished 4 out of 5 passing with 46 yards.

There is talent in the receiving core on this team, they just need a quarterback. We have been saying they need a quarterback since Chad Pennington was a Jet. Mark Sanchez proved he could be a good players, sometimes. Sometimes being the optimum word here. He wasn’t consistent enough to last. Fitzpatrick definitely isn’t the future of the Jets, nor is Geno Smith. The Jets drafted Bryce Petty this past year out of Baylor, and I don’t think he is the answer either. If the Jets lose this week to the Jaguars at home, all hell is going to break loose among Jets’ fans. We take a look and handicap if it’s going to happen this afternoon.

Jaguars vs. Jets Pick:

I alluded to the fact that the Jets have been on the hunt for a new quarterback for what feels like forever now. The Jaguars have been in the same boat as well. Who was it, David Garrard the last Jaguar quarterback to do anything of worth for them? Blake Bortles had a bust of a rookie campaign, but that’s okay. There are some quarterbacks that enter the NFL and light the world on fire, look at Colin Kaepernick and Robert Griffin. Where are those two guys now? And there have been others that have accepted their lumps in their opening season and gotten better. Bortles has gotten better, and I don’t think many people are taking note of that. He threw 11 touchdowns and 17 interceptions last season. Bortles has already surpassed that touchdown mark, passing for 15 already this season. He also has only 8 interceptions, a -6 ratio has improved to +7 in 2015.

What it could have been if Justin Blackmon was motivated to play football. The Jaguars wasted a draft pick on him and I’m pretty sure he won’t be returning to football. The Jags may have hit something with Bortles, though. He just needs more weapons around him. Jacksonville is currently 22nd in the NFL in team offense. Slowly but surely they may be able to move up. The Jags are coming off a bye after they defeated the Buffalo Bills in London, 34-31. I can’t back the Jets in this spot as 8-point favorites with Fitzpatrick nursing an injured hand. Yes, it isn’t his throwing hand, however, all it can take is one hit for him to start feeling it in his hand. If the Jets had a reliable backup, Fitzpatrick would not be playing this game. I need to take the points.

PICK: JAGUARS +8 (-110)
