Jets Bears Spread Line and Betting Prediction NFL Week 16

Nothing says late December football like a Jets Bears matchup, and this week we’ll be treated to a game between two teams who’ve got plenty to play for. The 10-4 Jets take on the 10-4 Bears from Soldier Field; kickoff is at 1:00 p.m. EST.

The Jets got a huge win over the Pittsburgh Steelers last week, keeping their playoff hopes alive. They currently hold the last AFC playoff spot, but with the Chargers and with the Jaguars right behind them, and with the same record as the 5th place Baltimore Ravens, the Jets have still got some work to do before they think about the playoffs. After losing back to back games to the Pats and Dolphins, and looking absolutely atrocious in the meantime, the Jets bounced back against the 10-4 Steelers last week. Their defense stood up and stopped Roethlisberger at the end of the game. The Steelers had the ball in the redzone on the last possession but the Jets held them out of the endzone. QB Mark Sanchez played better than in recent weeks, holding onto the ball in a zero turnover performance. It was a much needed win for Sanchez who’d gone the two previous weeks throwing 4 INTs, and two weeks ago against the Dolphins with a line of 17/44. But reports came out this week that hints at Sanchez sitting out this Sunday. He suffered a tear in his shoulder and according to head coach Rex Ryan is in jeopardy of play this week. If he doesn’t go, Mark Brunell will start in his place, which is a great boost for the Bears defense. The Jets play a Bears team this week that clinched the NFC North on Monday with a win over the Vikings and a Packer loss to the Patriots. But like the Jets, the Bears still have lots to play for.

Chicago have clinched a playoff spot. At 10-4 they’re currently 2nd in the NFC and are holding onto a first round bye, but the Philadelphia Eagles are right behind them with the same record, and the Bears will have to most likely win out to keep their bye. The Eagles finish up against the Vikings and Cowboys, two very winnable games. Chicago also sit two games back of the 12-2 Atlanta Falcons, and can put pressure on the Falcons with a win this week, while the Falcons have a tough game against the Saints on MNF. The key to the game this week will be how Chicago’s defense plays. They currently rank 3rd in points allowed, 3rd in rushing yards allowed and are in the top 10 in yards allowed. The Jets are 6th in rushing yards gained on the year, and if they can establish the run early on they can have some success. The Vikings had a tough time running on the Bears last week while Chicago did a bit of everything just right. QB Jay Cutler, who’s usually poor on the road in prime time games, played a safe game going 14/24 for 3 TDs and 1 INT, and Cutler knows the importance of the final two games of the season.

“We can’t let up,” he said in a conference call to the NY media following the Vikings game. “We still have a lot of football left. We’ve got a lot left to prove. If you let up for one week in this league, you’re going to get beaten and you’re going to get beaten very quickly.”

Jets vs. Bears Prediction for Week 16 Betting:

Spread Prediction (Top Play): At 10-4 and 2nd in the NFC, the Bears have quietly flown under the radar all year. With storylines surrounding the Eagles and Falcons, and with many people assuming the Packers would eventually win the NFC North when it’s all said and done, Chicago have benefitted from the lack of media attention. Out of the 4 games they’ve lost this year, 3 have been at home (Sea, Wash, NE). And the Jets will take their strong road record into Soldier Field this week. New York are 6-1 away from the New Meadowlands Stadium, and with the 1 point spread this week the game is essentially a pick ‘em game. With that being said, I like the Bears this week. The Jets have been less than impressive over the last several weeks, dating back to back to back OT wins against the Lions and Browns. This isn’t the same team as last year, and the recent added distraction of Rex Ryan’s foot fetish won’t help the locker room. Once again the Bears will take advantage of a bad opponent and should win this game quite handily.

Top Play Prediction = Bears –1.

Game Total Prediction: The number here is low, but with good reason. Both teams rank in the bottom half in offensive production and the top half in defense production. Chicago have been successful this year because of their defense. Their receiving corps and running game is average at best, and they’ve had no problem grinding out victories games all year. Five of their 14 games have gone under this low number this year, and they’ve held 6 opponents to less than 17 points. The Jets are hardly an offensive juggernaut lately. They’ve scored a combined 31 points in their last 3 games, including 3 against the Pats who rank 30th in pass yards allowed and 28th in yards allowed. I like the Under here.

Prediction = 36.5.
