The NFL is set up for another action packed Sunday this week. Twelve games will be up on the board throughout October 18. The New York Jets and the Miami Dolphins will meet up in one of those games. These two teams have struggled a bit throughout the early stages of this season but will look to earn a win in this divisional game. This game will kick off at around 4:05 PM Eastern time.
New York has started off this season with a record of 0-5, which has them in fourth place of the AFC East. The Jets have looked very poor this season and desperately need to show some life. New York is playing a tough divisional game in this one, but will look to gain some momentum in this one as Miami has been up and down this season.
The Dolphins have earned a record of 2-3 throughout the season, which has them in third place of the AFC East. Miami has looked solid at times throughout this season, which has helped them earn two big wins. The Dolphins are coming off a victory in Week 5 and will look to carry that momentum into this one as they try and knock off the Jets.
These two teams have struggled a bit throughout this season, but these teams will look to earn a big win in this one. I expect these two teams to try and get started early in this afternoon game. If either offense can get a big lead, I expect it will be enough. This is a divisional game though, which could lead to a close game between these two teams.
The Jets and the Dolphins met up twice throughout last season. The first meeting was in Miami in Week 9. Sam Darnold opened the scoring with a passing touchdown to Jamison Crowder, but that was about all New York could muster. Ryan Fitzpatrick threw three touchdown passes, including two to Preston Williams. Miami was able to earn a big 26-18 win in this one.
The second game of the season was in Week 14 in New York. Sam Darnold threw the only two touchdowns of the game as this one became a kicker duel. Jason Sanders went an impressive 7-8 on his field goal kicks, but it was not enough. Sam Ficken went 3-3 on his kicks, including the game winner as time ran out. New York finished with a 22-21 win at home.
New York is coming off a matchup against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 5. Kyler Murray rushed for a touchdown and passed for another. Kenyan Drake and Chase Edmonds both rushed for a touchdown as the Cardinals dominated. Joe Flacco had a passing touchdown as Sam Darnold was out. Arizona was able to earn a big 30-10 win on the road.
The Dolphins met up with the San Francisco 49ers in Week 5 this season. C.J. Beathard threw for a touchdown, while Kyle Juszczyk had a rushing touchdown. San Francisco could not earn the win though. Ryan Fitzpatrick threw for three touchdowns and Jason Sanders went 5-5 on field goal kicks as Miami was able to dominate for a 43-17 win.
Joe Flacco will start for the second straight week for the Jets as Darnold is still out with injury. Flacco played in 8 games last season, going 2-6 in his starts with the Broncos. Flacco threw for 1822 yards, 6 touchdowns and 5 interceptions last season. Flacco threw for 211 yards, 1 touchdown and 0 interceptions last week.
Ryan Fitzpatrick is the starting Quarterback for the Dolphins this season. Fitzpatrick has thrown for 1344 yards, 7 touchdowns and 5 interceptions to open up this season. Last week, Fitzpatrick went 22-28 for 350 yards, 3 touchdowns and 0 interceptions. The Dolphins will look for another similar start from Fitzpatrick in this matchup.
These two Quarterbacks did a good job protecting the football last week, but it was Fitzpatrick who had a much better start. The Dolphins will look to take advantage of Joe Flacco starting, while Flacco will look to prove he still has some gas left in the tank. If Flacco can come out a bit sharper on his passes in this one, it could give New York a chance to earn their first win.
Struggling Offense vs Strong Defense
New York has not been able to get anything going on offense this season. The Jets have scored 75 points, which is last in the NFL. New York has also only gained 1397 yards of offense, which is 31st in the league. The Jets have allowed opposing teams to score 161 points and gain 1971 yards of offense, which is 30th and 25th in the NFL respectively.
The Dolphins have been doing well on both sides of the football this season. Miami has scored 136 points, which is 13th in the league. The Dolphins have gained 1824 yards of offense, which is 20th in the NFL. Miami has allowed only 113 points and 1898 yards, which is 10th and 18th in the league respectively this season.
The Dolphins have been the better team on both offense and defense in comparison to the Jets. If Miami can continue to do solid, they should be able to dominate New York. The Jets will look to use the momentum from this divisional game to earn a big win on Sunday afternoon. New York will need to move the offense down the field though if they want to have a chance in this one.
The Jets have struggled throughout this season, but have a chance to earn a big win against their division rival. New York will need Joe Flacco to step up in this one, while their defense needs to shut down the Dolphins offense. I believe with this game being a division rivalry, it will be a tight game until the end.
Bovada has Miami listed as a -9 ½ against the spread in this one, which I believe is wrong. The Dolphins are coming off a big win, but they have not looked consistent enough to earn this big of a line. New York has looked bad this season, but I believe they will keep this game close. The Jets will need to step up on defense, which I think they can do against Ryan Fitzpatrick.
