New York Jets vs New England Patriots Week 17 Pick – NFL January 3

The NFL season is coming to a close with sixteen games up on the board throughout January 3. One of these games will be between the New York Jets and the New England Patriots. These two teams have struggled throughout this season, but will look to get a little momentum going into the offseason. This game will kick off at around 1:00 PM Eastern time.

New York has earned a record of 2-13 throughout this season, which has them in last place of the AFC East. The Jets found themselves at 0-13 two weeks ago, but have been able to win back to back games. New York is looking to win their third straight game entering the offseason to try and carry some momentum over. I expect the Jets to come out hot in this one as they look to knock off a division rival.

The Patriots have posted a record of 6-9 so far this season, which has them sitting in third place of the AFC East. New England has lost three straight games coming into this one, including a blowout loss to the Bills last week. The Patriots will look to finally break through before the season comes to a close in this one. I expect New England to come out hot in this one as they look to continue their winning streak against the Jets.

These two teams are way out of the playoff picture coming into Week 17, but I expect both teams to play for pride. The Jets have found some success late in the season winning back to back games, while New England has looked unmotivated in their three game losing streak. If either team can find some momentum early in this contest though, I think they will be able to earn a big win on Sunday afternoon.

Previous Matchups

These two teams met up back in Week 9 in New York. Joe Flacco had three passing touchdowns on the night, including two to Breshad Perriman. The Jets held a 27-17 lead in the third quarter, but it was not enough. Cam Newton had two rushing touchdowns, while Rex Burkhead had a rushing touchdown. The Patriots were able to earn a 30-27 win with a last second field goal.

The Jets faced off against the Cleveland Browns in Week 16. Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt both had a rushing touchdown for the Browns, but it was not enough. Sam Darnold had two passing touchdowns on the afternoon. Jamison Crowder had a passing touchdown and a receiving touchdown as the Jets were able to earn a 23-16 win.

New England met up with the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football in Week 16. Cam Newton had a rushing touchdown, but that was all the offense the Patriots could get going. Josh Allen had four passing touchdowns, including three to Stefon Diggs. Zack Moss also had a rushing touchdown as the Bills were able to earn a 38-9 win in primetime.

These two teams are coming off opposite performances last week. New York was able to sneak away with a win against a good Cleveland team. The Patriots kept it close early against the Bills, but were dominated in the second half of the game. New England had a comeback the first time they played the Jets and will look to have a better start to this one.

Quarterback Comparison

Sam Darnold will get the nod as the starter for New York in this one. Darnold has not had the best season so far. He has thrown for 1942 yards, 8 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. Darnold has also rushed for 214 yards and 2 touchdowns. Last week Darnold went 16-32 for 175 yards and 2 touchdowns in the win. The Jets will need Darnold to put up another strong performance like that in this one.

Cam Newton will likely get the start for the Patriots to finish out the season. Newton has struggled heavily throwing the ball. He has thrown for 2415 yards, 5 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Newton has rushed for 513 yards and 12 touchdowns. Last week he went 5-10 for 34 yards and 1 rushing touchdown in the loss.

These two teams have struggling Quarterbacks which has led to their poor seasons. Newton will start once again after being benched in Monday Night’s game. He has struggled heavily throwing the ball, but has been able to run well. Darnold has picked up his play the last few weeks and it has led to the back to back wins. If Darnold can finish this season strong, it could give them their third win.

Struggling Offenses

The Jets offense has not found any rhythm throughout this season. New York has scored 229 points and gained 4129 yards of offense, which are both 32nd in the entire NFL. The Jets have given up 429 points, which is 27th in the league. New York has also allowed opposing teams to gain 5797 yards of offense, which is 25th in the NFL.

New England’s offense has not been much better throughout this season, but their defense has been strong at times. The Patriots have scored 298 points and gained 4832 yards, which are 28th and 29th in the league. New England has given up 339 points to their opponents, which is 11th in the NFL. The Patriots have also allowed opposing teams to gain 5310 yards, which is 15th in the league.

These two teams have struggled offensively throughout this season, but New York has been able to figure out some of their issues the last two weeks. Even more impressively the Jets have been much better on defense since firing their defensive coordinator. The Patriots have not looked good on either side of the ball the last few weeks and will look to figure it out coming into this one.

Pick Overview

These two teams have struggled throughout this season, but will both look to finish the season out strong. New England has lost three straight games, while the Jets have won back to back games. I believe that the Patriots will bounce back in this one though to finish the season strong. If New England’s defense can shut down New York, they should be able to earn a win.

BetOnline has the Patriots listed as a -3 against the spread in this one. This gives a solid edge to New England at home. I expect the Patriots to come out much better in this one after being embarrassed last week. If New England can get going early in this one they should be able to knock off the Jets. New York has been dangerous as of late, but I do not expect that to last.
