Both teams are coming off divisional wins as the Packers scraped past the Lions while the Redskins outplayed the Eagles in Donovan McNabb’s return to Philly.
The Packers will be disappointed in how they finished last week’s game, as their defense allowed Detroit to sneak back in it and make it a closer finish that it should’ve been. Green Bay’s defense is up to its usual pass stopping self, but they’re having trouble stopping the run. The Lions out gained them 123-92 on the ground. The Pack have gone from the best run stopping unit from last year to the 24th ranked rush defense. The Redskins will be without six time 1,000 yard back for the next six weeks, and possibly the season, as Clinton Portis tore his groin in last weeks win. Ryan Torain picked up a TD and 70 yards on 18 carries versus the Eagles, and coach Shanahan has given him the vote of confidence this week, saying Torain is a “top back in the NFL, that’s for sure”. Look for Torain to be fed the ball lots this weekend against an ailing Packers unit. Torain stands at 6’1/225 and he runs with conviction.
On the flip side, the Packer’s Aaron Rodgers proves week after week why he’s a top 5 QB. He can make throws from anywhere and his athleticism sets him apart from the majority of quarterbacks. With Green Bay’s defense struggling to stop teams, Rodgers and the passing game has been asked to keep distance from teams by putting points on the board. With one of the best receiving units in the NFL, the Packers should have no problem airing it out versus a Washington team that ranks 31st in yards and 31st against the pass.

Packers vs Redskins Prediction for Week 5 Betting:
Game Total Prediction (Top Play): Neither team is where they want to be on defense this year. Washington’s star corner DeAngelo Hall has already spoken out about assignments during the game, saying he wants to cover the opposing number 1 when the game’s on the line. That sounds valiant, but Hall hasn’t exactly lit it up this year, as the Skins as a unit are giving up over 300 yards a game through the air. The Packers move the ball through the air like most teams move it on the ground. They pick up big chunks and score often, putting up over 25 points a game. However, their running defense has been poor and they’ll have to stack the box to keep Torain in check. McNabb also ran for 39 yards last week with a long of 18. Look for him to pull it down and take off for some big chunks in this one. I like the over in this game, as neither team is playing well on defense. Take the Over.
Spread Prediction: This should be a close game. The Packers are a far better offense and have more talent on the field, but the Redskins are playing better as a team and have a far better coach in Hall of Famer Mike Shanahan. But Green Bay LB Clay Mathews is a game changer this year and he’s good for a few big disruptive plays. As I said before, Green Bay are coming off a disappointing win over the Lions, but the Skins are coming off a huge victory over the Eagles. Washington are in a classic let down situation here, so I like the Packers to cover the spread this week. Take the Packers -2.5.
