Packers Vikings Spread Pick Week 7 NFL

Vikings’ rookie quarterback Christian Ponder is expected to make his very first NFL start against the defending Super Bowl Champions, the Green Bay Packers. Making matters worse for the kid from Florida State is that the Packers are currently undefeated on the season, and have shown virtually no evidence of losing anytime soon. They have been impressive in virtually all facets of the game, and look well on their way to another campaign in which they should be in the hunt come February.

Minnesota meanwhile is basically a polar opposite of their NFC North rivals. After acquiring Donovan McNabb in the off-season amid a wave of optimism, nothing has gone well for them through the first six weeks of this season. Like the Redskins before them, the Vikings too realized acquiring McNabb was a mistake and his best football clearly lies behind him. Now they are forced to throw in a rookie quarterback against the likes of A.J. Hawk, Clay Matthews, and Charles Woodson. Good luck kid.

Packers vs. Vikings Pick:

Those who give the Vikings a shot in this one likely allude to the fact that Cam Newton, also a rookie, threw for 432 yards against the Packers’ secondary. Sure Newton did, but Ponder is not even in the same class as the first overall pick from a year ago. The Packers have adamantly discussed their concerns pertaining to their own pass defense, and against a less than stellar opponent, will work hard to rectify these fixable issues. Ponder has poise, promise, and charisma, and looked decent in relief last week, but to throw him into this situation should make Minnesota supporters very worried.

The other play-caller in this game, Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers has been casually putting up MVP calibre numbers week in, week out. He is simply dominating right now, and has established great rapport with all of his receivers and tight ends. Rodgers makes everyone around him a threat, and against a Vikings’ squad with not much going right, expect Green Bay to pad their already impressive statistics en route to a comfortable victory.

The Vikings do have some talented weapons in key running back Adrian Peterson who has experienced some success against the Packers. But perhaps their biggest chance for a miraculous upset comes by way of star defensive end for Minnesota, Jared Allen. Allen currently has 9.5 sacks, and is on pace to shatter the single season record. If he can exploit the matchup against the inexperienced left tackle of Green Bay, Marshall Newhouse, the Vikes could experience some success in this one, but don’t count on it.

When it comes down to it, these teams are not even in the same class. The Packers will be fighting for a second straight Super Bowl title, whereas the Vikings will be looking to avoid that first overall selection. Rodgers is simply in a zone right now, and is highly motivated to prove his status as the sport’s elite quarterback. The Packers have dominated this series against the spread over the past few seasons, covering their last six of eight meetings, and expect that trend to continue in Minnesota. Nine points is not enough with the way Green Bay is firing, and you can bet they won’t let up against a hated division rival heading into a well-deserved bye next week.

PICK = Packers -9
