Packers at 49ers Pick:
Colin Kaepernick first burst onto the scene last year in a thrilling 45-31 performance against the very same Green Bay Packers he’ll take on today. Kaepernick managed 444 yards from scrimmage, including setting the NFL quarterback rushing record amassing 181 yards in the game. Today will not be as easy. The Green Bay defense has vowed to improve, and has focused all off-season on stepping it up in order to help their explosive offense.
Green Bay was embarrassing last year in the post-season against the 49ers. They were manhandled in every facet of the sport, and have spent a large portion of their off-season planning for this Week 1 showdown against the 49ers. Right now, the Niners are the beasts of the NFC, the defending champions, and you can bet Aaron Rodgers and company are eager to knock them from their perch. The Packers will be prepared and their defense won’t look like a high-school caliber. Expect the green and gold to get key stops, providing their explosive attack the momentum needed to generate scoring drives.
On the offensive side of the ball, the Packers still possess likely the best attack in the game. Adding the super-talented rookie Eddie Lacy into the mix is an added bonus and he should be able to make his presence felt in game one. For the first time in years, Green Bay now possesses a multi-dimensional attack, and it will be intriguing to see how the Niners’ much-heralded defense reacts to the dual threats of the Packers. Though San Francisco has a strong defense, it’s mostly concentrated in their front seven. Their secondary was and still is vulnerable. In the past against Green Bay, San Francisco would often drop players back in coverage as the running game was never a threat, although today will be different. The presence of Lacy makes the Niners’ task a difficult one today. Expect Green Bay to mix it up, and confuse San Francisco in what is certainly a massive statement game.
The Packers are the more ready team for this game. After being dismantled by Kaepernick in last year’s post-season, Green Bay has had this date circled for a long time coming. The day is here and expect Aaron Rodgers and his potent attack to put the pressure on the Niners. His speedy wideouts; Randall Cobb, James Jones, and Jordy Nelson can all out-run the members of the San Francisco secondary, and look for that to be a decisive advantage. The Packers have covered 11 of their last 14 meetings against the 49ers, including six of their last seven in San Francisco. This Packers squad is being forgotten about in a big way, and I’ll take them every day of the week getting 4.5 points against any team in the league.
PICK = Green Bay +4.5 (-110)
