Raiders vs. Redskins Pick:
Washington will quickly find out on Sunday night that Derek Carr is a lot better and smarter than Jared Goff. The Redskins capitalized on a ton of Goff’s miscues in Week 2, and look for the Raiders’ attack to be a lot more efficient. Even getting to Carr will prove hopeless for the Washington defensive unit. Carr is extremely well-protected and as a result look for the Raiders’ QB to have ample time and space to pick apart the Washington secondary.
Oakland is blessed to have two elite receivers in Michael Crabtree and Amari Cooper. Granted, one is expected to be blanketed by Josh Norman – but the ‘Skins don’t have the depth to handle both. It’s also worth mentioning that Washington has had some pretty suspect linebacker play so far in 2017, so don’t be surprised to see the Raiders’ running back corps decisively win this match-up.
Washington conceded 5.5 yards per carry last week to Todd Gurley, so that bodes well for another stellar outing from ‘Beast Mode’ Marshawn Lynch. It’ll be a case of ‘pick your poison’ for Washington with the Raiders crushing them either through the air or with the ground and pound.
On the other side of the football, the Redskins are coming off of a stellar offensive outing, but things won’t be nearly as easy this week. Oakland generates a bunch of pressure on opposing QB’s, so Kirk Cousins will have a tough go of things. Khalil Mack cannot be stopped by anybody and he’ll be living in the Washington backfield. Last week, Cousins certainly was nothing special – barely trying anything downfield. The Washington O-Line can’t block effectively enough for him to go deep, and this will and should play into the hands of the Raiders.
It is remarkable how quickly the Oakland Raiders have ascended to the role of legitimate Super Bowl contender. They are one of the best teams in football and this week will be yet another example of that – on primetime TV no less. Washington has key injuries and weaknesses that play right into the hands of a very complete Raiders squad. This number is short and though it’s a square play, the Raiders look to be the right side on Sunday night.
PICK = Raiders -3 (-120)
