Ravens vs. Steelers Pick – NFL Sunday Night Football Week 9

The Ravens/Steelers rivalry doesn’t have the history as some of the other great tandems in sport, but in terms of recent intensity, there aren’t much things better than when these two teams square off. On Week 9’s Sunday Night Football, these squads enter with identical records seeking supremacy in the ultra-competitive AFC North division. The Baltimore Ravens are 5-3 and have done a good job of shaking off the Ray Rice fiasco to be competitive in 2014. Last week they lost a tough one to the Bengals and will be eager to rebound this week in Steeltown. Pittsburgh is also 5-3, fresh off throttling the Colts. Ben Roethlisberger had one of the greatest games from a quarterback in NFL history, but the Ravens defense is far better than what he saw in Week 8 vs. the Colts. This rivalry match-up promises to be an intense affair with lots on the line Sunday night. Read on below for a winning wager to end your Sunday evening on the right note.

Ravens vs. Steelers Pick:

What can Ben Roethlisberger possibly do to top last week’s performance where he threw for 522 yards? Nothing. Consider that the peak of his season both individually and for his Steelers. Pittsburgh is overachieving right now with their personnel. The Ravens are a better team in every area and look for Baltimore to prove that again tonight. Early in the year Baltimore throttled the Steelers by 20 points and while it may not be that lopsided again tonight, the Ravens should be able to exert their will convincingly against Pittsburgh. Let’s not forget that this is a Pittsburgh team that lost at home to the Bucs, barely beat Jacksonville, and got smoked by the Browns. This is a very mediocre group.

Roethlisberger was able to dominate last week because Indianapolis plays zero defense and has no pass rush. The Ravens aren’t like that… at all. This is a fierce group with solid talent at virtually every position. They rush the passer at will and have had great success so far this year. The foursome of Terrell Suggs, Elvis Dumervil, Haloti Ngata, and Pernell McPhee have been vicious at getting to the opposing quarterback, including when they rattled Roethlisberger back in Week 2. The Steelers had no answers then, and they won’t this evening either. Baltimore has also been great at containing the run game, currently ranking ninth in the league at just 3.83 yards per carry. Le’Veon Bell won’t find many holes and Roethlisberger won’t have much time. Don’t count on the Steelers having an easy offensive night Sunday evening.

One glaring point from last week’s Steelers/Colts tilt was just how bad Pittsburgh looked when they were on defense. Andrew Luck embarrassed their secondary, and Joe Flacco should be able to have similar success this evening. Add in the fact that Baltimore’s offensive line is now fully healthy and can contend with a solid Pittsburgh pass rush, and big yardage through the air is in store for this evening. Torrey Smith and Steve Smith Sr. should both have big games going against the Steelers’ secondary. On the ground, Justin Forsett should also keep Pittsburgh on their toes. They haven’t defended well vs. the run so far this season, entering tonight’s contest 26th in the NFL. Look for the Ravens to have no issues moving the chains tonight.

This is just a great match-up for Baltimore. They routed the Steelers in Week 2 and should be able to do so again tonight. Yes, the Steelers are home underdogs, but it’s because they’re nowhere near as good as Baltimore in this match-up. The Ravens have responded well to losses in recent history and this instance should be no different. Look for a solid Ravens road outing, resulting in a statement victory. Baltimore by a touchdown to end of what hopes to be a profitable Sunday for all of us!
