Both the Chargers and Steelers have already endured their fair share of significant injuries, but that doesn’t rule them out of an eventual post-season berth. Steelers vs. Chargers Pick:
The Chargers’ issues along their offensive line have been well-documented. They’ve been down as much as three starters at times in 2015, though the good news is they’re slated to get at least one key lineman back for Monday night vs. Pittsburgh. The protection can’t be any worse against the Steelers and as a result look for a very solid outing from Philip Rivers. Much of the reason you can expect a great performance from Rivers can be attributed to Pittsburgh’s woeful secondary. The unit has huge issues in the defensive backfield, and the Chargers definitely have the personnel to exploit that weakness. Pittsburgh has fared alright against the likes of Foles and Kaepernick, but Rivers and his array of receivers presents a really difficult challenge. You’ve got to like San Diego’s ability to move the ball tonight.
On defense for the Chargers, they’ll need to really focus in on stopping Le’Veon Bell and not letting him take over this football game. He’s a dominating back and the Chargers are mediocre at containing the run. Bell is going to get his, and the Chargers can’t really can’t do anything about that, but they need to prevent him from dominating and setting up Mike Vick to do damage from the pocket. Luckily for San Diego, Vick has badly regressed over the years. Though the Steelers were ultra conservative with him last Thursday, expect a bit more needed from Pittsburgh’s QB on the road tonight. Vick though struggles to make reads and is still inaccurate with his passes. He also can be forced into turnovers and with the pressure that the Chargers can create, don’t be surprised if Vick loses this game for the Steelers in spite of good outings from Bell and Antonio Brown.
Mike Vick is 4-17 against the spread since 2012, and as erratic as the Chargers defense is, it’s not as bad as Pittsburgh’s. San Diego will also have some injured linemen returning to the fold tonight, which should help with Rivers’ pass protection. Expect to see this be a high-scoring game, and ultimately one in which San Diego pulls away late in. The Roethlisberger injury will loom large tonight, as the Chargers squeak out a tight one.
PICK = Chargers -3.5 (-115)
