The Pittsburgh Steelers travel to Kansas City for a clash with the lifeless Chiefs on Sunday. The Chiefs have gotten off to a miserable start at 1-6 and have already taken themselves out of postseason contention. It feels so long ago that this team was competing for top of the league honors. Now they are looking at a high draft pick in the draft. The season went completely awry for the Chiefs after Jamaal Charles tore his ACL. The injury left the Chiefs with a punchless offense with holes all over the field. The Chefs’ offense is based around the running abilities of Charles, without him there is little on this offense. Other than tight end Travis Kelce, is there anything else defenses have to worry about? The answer is for the most part no. Jeremy Maclin has looked good at times and is the first receiver for the Chiefs to score a touchdown for them in over a year. However, without any other receiver threats on the Chiefs, it makes it really easy on the defense to shut them down. Additionally, Maclin has been going through concussion tests this week and we didn’t even know if he’d be able to play this week.
Remember when everyone was saying how bad the Steelers’ defense was going to be this year? Well, they aren’t nearly as bad as that original prediction. The same thing happened with the Dallas Cowboys a year ago. Before the season started, there were lots of pundits saying that the Cowboys were going to have the worst defense in the NFL but they weren’t that bad after all. Here again with the Steelers, they have been pretty good for what they have. The Troy Polamalu era is over in Pittsburgh but they’re trying to make due, and have been doing a pretty good job of it.
The defense has had to been good during this stretch with Ben Roethlisberger out. Roethlisberger is listed as questionable for this game and Michael Vick is out. If Big Ben can’t go, which it’s looking like he won’t, Landry Jones will be under center again this week. It would be a big accomplishment for the Steelers to get to 5-2 without Roethlisberger since the St. Louis Rams game. The Steelers aren’t going to get anywhere with Landry Jones all season long, but it looks like this will be the last week they’ll be without Roethlisberger. The Steelers have prepared this week with the assumption that Landry Jones will start. Ugliest week I have had in the NFL last week in years, let’s bounce back with a better performance in week 7.

Steelers vs. Chiefs Pick:
The Chiefs need to find some way to move the football. They need to get to the drawing board and construe something that nets some yardage. Maybe some trickery? They can’t depend on Alex Smith to throw the ball around 30 times a game because there isn’t enough for him to work with in the passing game. They can’t line up and run the ball with any great consistency because they are without Jamaal Charles, who was also a threat in the passing game. With Charles out Charcandrick West has overtook the starting duties. West is a second year player out of Albine Christian who didn’t get one carry last season. He rushed for only 33 yards last week. Knile Davis is also in the mix, but he has only rushed for 40 yards total this week. This all adds up to what I think is the worst offense in the NFL, as it stands with all of the injuries.
Last week was the first week without Jamaal Charles at running back and it wasn’t pretty, scoring only 10 points against the Vikings. The defense has been quite good, though. They gave up 16 points and 18 points the last two weeks. Their defense may be able to keep them in this game to keep them in it. With Landry Jones at quarterback anyway. He played well last week, passing for 2 touchdowns, but only 168 yards. The Steelers handed the ball off 26 times. They didn’t want to put the ball in Jones hands to win the game. I see a low-scoring game between the Steelers and Chiefs. The UNDER has gone 4-0 the last four games for the Steelers and 2-0 the last two for the Chiefs. Also, the UNDER has gone 3-0 the last three times they’ve met. Note that this bet is with the assumption that Landry Jones is playing and NOT Roethlisberger.
PICK: UNDER 43 POINTS (-110)
