Another London showcase game Sunday morning. This time we get the Minnesota Vikings and Cleveland Browns traveling to London for overseas battle. Kenny Britt must be enthralled about having to go back to Europe to play. When he was with the Titans, it let it be known publicly that he hated everything about the trip.
The travel aspect was bad, food sucked, the entire experience was not enjoyable. Lucky for Britt that he plays for the Browns and will get another dose of London hospitality in Week 8. Speaking of Week 8, I can’t believe we’re already in Week 8. The season thus far has been a little all over the place, but I think once we move into November a clearer picture will start to evolve.
The picture is already pretty clear for the Browns and it isn’t pretty. They haven’t figured out who their quarterback is out of DeShone Kizer, Kevin Hogan, and Cody Kessler. That’s an ugly looking lineup. Kizer gave some hope to Browns’ fans for about a game in the preseason, but things can sure change in the regular season. Defenses are playing a little harder and moving a little faster. Kizer has yet to adjust to the speed at the professional level, that much has been clear.
And then there is Kevin Hogan, who I was never a fan of at Stanford to begin with. His greatest asset in college was his legs, but at this level of play, he isn’t a fast quarterback by any means. The majority of the time when I got expected over Hogan, it was because he made a long run on the ground, not a pinpoint accurate pass downfield.
We haven’t seen him make any plays like that in the NFL, either. Are there any weapons on offense helping him out? Not quite, enter the terrible decision of signing Kenny Britt to a $32.5 million 4-year contract. Don’t ask me. Let’s go to London this morning and search for a winner. Vikings vs. Browns Pick:
If I were a fan in London, this wouldn’t have been my first pick for a matchup. I am sure everyone is excited for the arrival of Case Keenum and DeShone Kizer. Keenum will get the nod for the Vikings again in Week 8. He’s done a fine job coming in for Sam Bradford after he went down.
The Vikes acquired Bradford to replace the injured Teddy Bridgewater, and then Keenum went in for Bradford. After losing all off last season, Bridgewater finally practiced this week and may return before the end of the year. There isn’t any reason to rush him back with Keenum playing serviceably, but it’s exciting news nevertheless.
The Minnesota defense has been the catalyst for them this season, as it’s been for a few years. They’re 4th in yards allowed per game with 283 yards allowed per game. The Vikings are surrendering 17 points per game, 5th in the NFL. Keenum just has to hold the fort down for the Vikings to be a successful team. Minimize the mistakes and don’t turn the ball over, and the defense will take care of the rest.
The Browns are averaging just 14.7 points per game, 31st in the league. Reports indicate that Kizer is going to get the start in London. The Browns don’t have much of a choice. Cody Kessler has proven he is not a starter, and Hogan went from 1st to 3rd stringer pretty quickly. Kizer holds a ridiculously bad quarterback rating of 47.8. He’s thrown 3 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in his rookie year. I don’t see how they move the ball on the Minnesota defense. The Browns do not want to be here, especially Kenny Britt. We’ll go with the Vikings to win and cover in what should be a rather dull game in London.
PICK: VIKINGS -9.5 (-110)
