St. Louis Blues (-120) @ Calgary Flames (+100)
After a big victory with the St. Louis Blues on Wednesday evening, we’ll go back with them again tonight as they take on a reeling Calgary Flames squad. The Blues snapped a huge 5-game losing streak Wednesday with a big victory over the Detroit Red Wings, and should be ready to roll again as their road-trip heads to Alberta. The Flames, despite winning their last game, are a non-playoff team desperately in need of some organizational direction. They possess a mediocre line-up comprised of mostly overpaid or useless veterans and it’s desperately time for a rebuild.
Though the Blues have struggled of late, they remain one of the top teams in the NHL. They are blessed with great depth at all positions, and despite their net-minding struggles with Brian Elliot, Jake Allen is capable of carrying the load with starter Jaroslav Halak out with an injury.
The Flames too have had to endure some goaltending issues of their own. Starting goalie Miikka Kiprusoff remains out with a knee injury, and back-up Leland Irving has had to fill-in fo r him. Irving is a capable netminder, but has struggled of late. His defense in front of him has also shown recent struggles, and will struggle handling the great forward depth of the Blues.
Right now, betting markets seem to be undervaluing St. Louis given their recent slide. Winning in Detroit on Wednesday was a true turning point for their team, and I don’t expect the Blues to look back until they reach the post-season. They are a legitimate Cup contender, and they’ll show that Friday night in St. Louis.
Last year, the Blues routed the Flames in the season series. They outscored Calgary by a score of 11-6, going 3-1-0 in 4 games against them. Expect 2013 to be no different, and comfortably bet the Blues at a generous price.
PICK = St. Louis (-120)
