Our featured selections enter Wednesday evening with a stellar 12-5 record, and tonight we return with a huge Central division clash from the Motor City. The division favourite St. Louis Blues enter Detroit one of the coldest teams in the league. After a brutal five-straight losses, the Blues will look to snap out of their streak as they take on a Detroit team that has reeled off three straight victories. It’s a tale of two teams headed in opposite directions, and we’re betting both streaks end tonight.
St. Louis Blues (+100) @ Detroit Red Wings (-120)
Let’s try and not read too much into the Blues’ recent struggles. This remains an absolutely loaded team, comprised of solid depth and great coaching. While teams have had a tendency to tune of Ken Hitchcock in the past, the Blues aren’t doing that just yet. They simply haven’t gotten the goaltending of late, and that should change Wednesday night.
Since Jaroslav Halak went down with a groin injury, backup netminder Brian Elliot has had to fill the void. He’s been simply brutal in relief, and now the Blues will turn to their highly touted young goalie Jake Allen. Allen has thrived this year in the AHL and should step up and provide St. Louis with the goaltending it needs. This team remains a favourite in a stacked Western Conference, and after being called out by their head coach and captain David Backes, bank on the Blues bouncing back in a big way on Wednesday night.
The Wings meanwhile have been overachieving of late. They were routed by the Kings on Sunday but found a way to squeak out a victory, but are still missing some key players to injuries. Their defense is severely depleted, and look for a motivated and hungry Blues squad to roll them over. St. Louis has the most impressive depth in the NHL and should be able to wear down a top-heavy Wings line-up. The Blues have converted on a league-leading 34.8 of their power plays, and look for that to get them back into the win column. St. Louis is a premier NHL team and they’ll return to form Wednesday night in Detroit.
PICK: St. Louis (+100)
