Bruins vs. Blues Pick – NHL February 20th

The Boston Bruins were struggling earlier in the season, but a lot of people thought they were going to turn things around in the second half. They turned it around alright, and now they aren’t struggling, but are in full in full blown crisis mode. Once the best defense in the NHL, the Bruins have been a team lately that have looked they wouldn’t be able to stop a college team. Their losing streak hit an embarrassing turn in their last game, as they dropped a game to the dreadful Edmonton Oilers. Coupled with the fact that they blew a 3 goal lead to the Flames just before, it is easy to come to the conclusion that the Bruins are sweating at this juncture. The loss to the Oilers moved their losing streak to five games. For the Bruins a five game losing streak has been unheard of in recent memory the past few seasons. There is still time to turn on the jets and finish up the season strong, but they haven’t shown much interest in doing that. Now after a rough trip to the west, they come back south to play a very good St. Louis Blues team.

The Blues are in a spot where the Bruins are usually used to being, which is at the top. The Blues have had good seasons lately, but this is their best to date. As I have alluded to before about the Blues, we know they are good, and know they can win in the regular season, but the playoffs are a different animal. We will see if they can add to the Bruins woes tonight at home. This most definitely isn’t the way the Bruins wanted to be feeling heading into this game. It won’t be easy to snap their streak against the Blues tonight. However, I expect them to be focused after getting ran over on the west. We’ll see what transpires, and we’ll look for a winning pick tonight from St. Louis.

Boston Bruins @ St. Louis Blues

Let’s look at this Bruins’ defense from last year to now shall we. Last season the Bruins finished with the 2nd best defense in the NHL behind only the LA Kings. Then they were allowing 2.08 goals scored per game. Today entering tonight against the Blues they find themselves allowing an abundance of goals, 2.51 per game in fact. Not a huge number, but for their standards the defense has been getting shellacked. In their previous four games they gave up 5, 5, 4, and 4 goals. The Bruins depend on their defense, it isn’t like they have an offense that can score 4 goals a night. They aren’t bad offensively, but they do need the defense to be the driving force. And right now, it isn’t there.

The Blues offense, who have been quite good, 5th in the league in scoring, will look to exploit the issues they’ve had on defense lately. St. Louis comes into tonight averaging just over 3 goals a game. An offense that doesn’t get much credit, but they are better than perceived. The Bruins have gone OVER the total in four straight games, much to do with how they have been playing defensively. I think this has a 4-2 game written all over it. I am not going to go big on it, but as such, I will make a bet on the OVER 5.5.

Pick – OVER 5.5 GOALS (+100) (Best Odds)
