The Vancouver Canucks and Arizona Coyotes meet in a meeting of two teams who are looking to buck some recent poor play around. The Canucks were able to end a four game skid last night with a win over the Avalanche, and now the Coyotes will have a chance to end their four game losing streak. At 21-20-9 in Vancouver, and 24-22-5 for the Coyotes, both of these clubs are in a similar position as we prepare for the last few months of the season. The Yotes have been in a rut their last ten games, tossing away what was good positioning for a playoff push in the second-half of the season. Arizona hasn’t won since before the All-Star break, where they won a couple in a row following another four game skid. The one time that the Coyotes lost five in a row was on a road trip. They will look to stop the bleeding at four consecutive losses. The Coyotes are 2-8 in their last ten games. Their defense has been a major eyesore, which has been the case for the majority of the season. You cannot expect a team to score 5 goals every night, and that is the kind of situation they’ve been in given their defense.
Louis Domingue provided stability for the Coyotes between the pipes, but after allowing 15 goals in three games, Anders Lindback was given a chance against the Ducks. It came with the same result, as the Coyotes allowed 5 goals in a 5-2 effort. I expect to see Domingue back in net tonight. Lindback is running out of chances as his GAA has risen to 3.11. If Domingue continues to play like he has in his last three outings, the rest of the year could be a rough one in Arizona. Conversely, the Canucks have had a hard time finding goals. This is one of those games that could ruin the rest of the Coyote’s season. Get lit up like a Christmas tree again by the Canucks and the writing will be on the wall. It is imperative that the Coyotes bounce back and take advantage of a team playing a back-to-back on the road. Especially against a team who might not be able to exploit the Coyotes’ weakness. Vancouver Canucks vs. Arizona Coyotes NHL Pick
Last night the Canucks got the 3-1 win behind goaltender Jacob Markstrom in net. Markstrom has won four games in a row. The Canucks have shared goaltending duties between Markstrom and Ryan Miller. I expect to see Miller in night tonight after Markstrom took the crease last night in Colorado. Miller holds a 2.64 GAA on the season, compared to a 2.38 for Markstrom. Markstrom is the future for the Canucks who was obtained in the Luongo deal, while Miller provides veteran leadership. However, the goal scoring department has been difficult to look at sometimes. Before their 3-1 win last night, the Canucks scores 1 goal each in their previous three games. Vancouver is 26th in the NHL with 2.31 goals scored per game on average.
Then there is the Coyotes, who are last in goals allowed per game. As I stated earlier, the Yotes have been getting pounded lately, as their 2-8 record in their last ten games indicates. Statistically they have been getting blown away, scoring only 1.80 goals per game and allowing 3.40 goals. After allowing 20 goals in their last five games, though, I think the Coyotes come out with an inspired performance. They are the beneficiaries of catching the Canucks on a back-to-back. The Canucks and Coyotes have split their season series thus far. This is a big game for the Yotes and I think they play like it is important Wednesday night.
