Canucks vs. Red Wings Pick – NHL November 30th

The Lightning took care of business last night, dispatching the Senators with ease 4-1 to give us a profitable win at +144 on the Lightning -1.5. The game played out as expected, it was close early, but the Senators who were on their fourth road game in a row looked exhausted come the 3rd period. The score was 1-1 heading into the last stanza, but the Lightning ultimately busted out to make it a fairly convincing win. The Lightning add to an already impressive resume home by improving to 10-2 at home. There are many teams in the NHL that have a shot at making it all the way to the Cup every year and this year with a healthy Stamkos, the Lightning are no exception. They are in my group of teams that would not surprise me at making it deep in the playoffs. If they can stay healthy, which is a big if. The Senators will probably finish the season up exactly where they are now, hovering around .500 with their eyes looking forward to the future instead of the present. With only one game on the NHL schedule, we turn to Detroit today where the surging Canucks make a visit to Hockeytown.

I usually don’t make NHL plays on Sundays because I like to focus on the NFL, but when a line sticks out to me I’ll play it. It should make for an exciting game in the least, against two teams that have gotten off to hot starts to the 2014-15 season. It’ll take some time to decipher if it is just smoke and mirrors, but so far so good for the Canucks and Red Wings. The Wings are so well coached and disciplined that I would be surprised they hit a wall completely. They’ll have their rough spells, every team does, but should continue to play well under head coach Mike Babcock. It always helps when you get your playmaker back as well. In this case, that would be Pavel Datsyuk. The offense has seen an immense boost since his return, and it is understandably so. Datsyuk is a player that can change things around dramatically for the Red Wings. The offense is a totally different animal with him installed in the offense and is the type of player that makes everyone around him better. And that is where I think we’re going to make our money today. Is it a mistake by the books setting this total?

Vancouver Canucks @ Detroit Red Wings

I think the price on the ML is right on point, with the Red Wings priced at -130 currently. However, considering how well the Wings’ offense has been playing lately I think this should be a total of 5.5. The Canucks haven’t been no jokes offensively as well. Take a look at the Wings most recent games. In their last six games they have averaged 4 goals per game. They had a 1 goal outing thrown in there against the Leafs that skews the number, but in the other five games, the Wings scored 4 or more goals in all of them. The offense has been quite potent playing at home as well. Note they are scoring 3.63 goals at home this season, and they were without their best player for the majority of it. The Canucks will look to counter against the Wings today, who have been looking good in their own right.

The verdict is still out on the Canucks (16-6-1), but they’ve done about everything in their power thus far this season. Like the Red Wings, their offense has been playing well as well. In their last five games, the Canucks have averaged 3.8 goals. So, between the two teams, they’ve scored around 8 goals in total per game. On average throughout the entire year, the Canucks are scoring over a little over 3 goals per game. The Wings and Canucks are averaging over 30 shots combined. All this considered it makes the total of 5 very inviting. The OVER 5 is juiced, but at a minimum the bet should push. We’ll look to make it a 5th straight win, though, and lock in the OVER 5 for Sunday afternoon.
