The Blackhawks just can’t crack the Dallas Stars. In their third attempt in less than a month, they fell again, this time even harder. It snapped their five-game winning streak, as they seemed to get too comfortable against the Stars in a 4-0 loss. We’re heading to the desert tonight, where the Washington Capitals and Arizona Coyotes will square off in a meeting of two teams on the opposite end of the totem pole.
The Coyotes cannot buy a win at the moment, while the Capitals have been on fire in December. It’s been cold outside, but the Caps are beating up at the right time. They will put their four-game winning streak on the line in Arizona tonight. Additionally, the Capitals have won eight of nine games and eleven of thirteen. They narrowly escaped the Ducks and Stars in their last two outings in a couple of overtime wins.
The Capitals can’t overlook the Coyotes tonight. The Yotes will be motivated to end their seven-game losing streak against a heavyweight like the Capitals. They’ve also lost nine of their last ten outings. It was expected to be choppy waters for the Coyotes in 2017-18, but a record of 7-24-4 is pretty ugly to look at. Will we know this as the curse of Shane Doan in the future?
If they’re a bad team for the next ten years, no matter where they are located, you’ll hear people talk about a curse. The Coyotes opted to shy away from giving Doan an extension, ultimately signalling his retirement. He was certainly slowing down, but the argument could have been made that he should have gone out on his own terms.
For a guy who was a fixture in their organization for so many years, it would have made sense. This is no curse, though, they’re just a team without much talent at the moment. Clayton Keller leads the Yotes in scoring with 12 goals. The next closest scorer is Derek Stepan and Oliver Ekman-Larsson with 6 goals. Max Domi has to start contributing some more. His 3 goals and 15 assists isn’t what he was drafted to do. Head below for our free Capitals vs. Coyotes pick on Friday night.
Washington Capitals vs. Arizona Coyotes Pick
Alexander Ovechkin has been an absolute fire show on the ice. Take a look at his overtime winner against the Ducks. He put a laser over the shoulder of John Gibson for the winning goal. That’s just Ovi being Ovi, though. He has 23 goals and 14 assists on the year. Between him and Kucherov, they really would have been exciting to watch in the Olympics. They are both tied with 23 goals to lead the NHL. Overall as a team, the Capitals are 8th in the league with 3.14 goals per game. In their last ten, they’ve scored 3.8 a game. The Caps have scored at least 4 goals in seven of their last nine contests.
Conversely, the Coyotes have been finding it difficult to score goals without any playmakers. During their seven-game losing streak, they’ve averaged just 1 goals per game. In their last ten, they’ve scored 1.6 per and allowed 3 per game. Is it any wonder why this team is 7-24-4? They are 3-11-1 at home this season. So long as the Capitals do not come to this game half asleep, they should take this game by a couple of goals or more .
PICK: CAPITALS -1.5 (+120)
