Capitals vs. Jets NHL Pick – February 13th

The Washington Capitals travel to Winnipeg for a Tuesday night matchup with the Jets. The Capitals are hoping that it goes better than their last game, a 5-4 loss to the Red Wings in overtime. The Red Wings are a team that the Caps should beat at home, but every good team has one of those games here and there. There’s no doubt, though, the Capitals have not looked as dominant this season as they’ve been in the past. Those dominant regular seasons really didn’t work out when it came to the playoffs, though. Maybe the Capitals are trying something different. As wide open as it is, the Caps aren’t out of anything by a long shot. With the Jets and Golden Knights playing above their heads, the playoffs may separate the men from the boys. It would be something else if the Jets and Knights go on big runs in the playoffs, even though they haven’t done much wrong in the regular season.

The Jets have been stabilizing a bit lately, with three wins in their last seven games. They just have to keep it together and not let this thing get away. It’s a marathon, not a sprint, and the Jets were certainly sprinting in the first-half of the season. Nevertheless, they’re in a fine position with a record of 32-15-7. Barring a collapse, the Jets should cruise to a spot in the playoffs. Getting home ice advantage is going to be particularly important for the Jets. They are great at home in Winnipeg. No team wants to travel to Winnipeg, and the Jets are taking advantage of that. On the road, though, they turn into an average team. They will have to be better than average tonight to beat a Capitals team who are coming off a bad loss. Head below for our free Capitals vs. Jets pick.

Washington Capitals vs. Winnipeg Jets Pick

The Capitals have been getting so-so performances out of Braden Holtby this season. Holtby and the defence have been the difference for the Caps. They play better hockey and they’d have a much better record than what they have now at 32-17-6. They’re currently 17th in the league, with 2.91 goals allowed per game. Conversely, the Capitals are scoring 3.09 goals per game for 9th. So, if the Capitals had a defence in the top-10, we have to assume they’d have a bigger cushion right now in the Metro.

The Caps have 70 points, while the Penguins are at 66 points. They’ve gotten away with sloppy play on defence and are still 1st in their division, so it could be much worse for them. You take the good with the bad. They’ve allowed 3.4 goals per in their last ten games, so there hasn’t much evidence of the defence getting better, though.

However, they still scored 3.3 goals per game, including 12 goals total in their last three games. Winnipeg has allowed 8 goals in their last two games, and I expect them to find difficulties against the Capitals’ offence tonight. The Capitals have averaged 3.8 goals per game in their last ten meetings with the Jets. The OVER has gone 7-2-1 during that time. The OVER has also gone 6-1 in the Caps last seven games. The last meeting between these two resulted in a 4-3 win for the Capitals in overtime. I expect something similar, with a close high-scoring affair in Winnipeg. The OVER looks like a good option for some NHL action on Wednesday.

PICK: OVER 5.5 (-110)
