What an awful beat last night. I have had many of them on the ice this season, this being the third game I have either lost or pushed on in the last 5 seconds of a game, but that one had a whirl of emotions in that particular game. The Bruins got down to the Flames 2-0, fought back, then took the lead with a penalty shot goal late with a minute left in the game. Flames tie it up with 2 seconds in regulation and win it in regulation. My hockey season wrapped up into a few seconds. Tonight we go out north to Winnipeg where the ultra-hot Washington Capitals get their chance to extend their impressive run against the Jets. The Jets have pretty nice home ice advantage in the sense that not many teams want to travel all the way out to Winnipeg to play the Jets. They’re one of those teams where if you take them lightly they’ll bite you. The Capitals don’t want to find out. Washington has gotten off to a 18-5-1 start.
Do people really believe in the Capitals yet? I don’t think so. They need to make it to the Stanley Cup Finals before that starts to happen. They fade away in the playoffs, yet have solid regular seasons. But at the pace they’re going right now, if they keep it up, this would especially be a tough one to swallow. Alexander Ovechkin isn’t getting any younger, but he is still playing some of the best hockey of his life right now. He is still in his prime years, and years where he has to win a Stanley Cup. I still see him being a great player for another several years from now. However, if he doesn’t win a Stanley Cup within the next two years, or at least get the Capitals to the finals, there will be a dark cloud hovering over his head for a long time. He will always be known as the Dan Marino of hockey. With this kind of start for the Capitals, the microscope is going to be on him even more.
Washington Capitals vs. Winnipeg Jets NHL Pick
The Winnipeg Jets are so Jekyll and Hyde. On separate nights they look like a different team. Which would explain their overall record of 12-12-1. The Capitals have won their last six games, while the Jets are 4-6 in their last ten games. Pretty well the season for the Jets in a nutshell. The reason for this strong push from the Capitals has been the offense. In their last six games, during this winning streak, the Caps have averaged 4 goals per game. In their last ten games they’ve scored 3.50 goals per game. Not a good sign for Winnipeg, who has allowed the same amount of goals per game in their last ten games.
This season the Jets have allowed 3.08 goals per game, tied for 29th in the NHL. They have an offense on their hands this evening who are 4th in the league with 3.21 goals scored per game. But the Jets have actually had a pretty nice offense this season for 7th in the NHL. Their struggles fall squarely on the back of the defense. It could make for a pretty entertaining game tonight between the Capitals and Jets. I see the Caps winning and some goals being scored as well. 6-1 have gone OVER in their last seven played against each other. I am betting the OVER 5.5 with a lean on the Capitals.
PICK: OVER 5.5 GOALS (-110)
