The Washington Capitals continue their west coast tour in California with a stop in Los Angeles tonight. They’ve hit, in their realm anyway, a snag that has involved two losses in a row. For the Capitals, that’s what you would call a cold run. Overall, across their last ten games I’d say they’re cold as well, with only five wins. It isn’t very Capital like, but for as hot as they were, they were bound to go through a cooling off period. Definitely better now then in the playoffs, which is right around the corner.
The most eye opening has been the performances of Braden Holtby over the last two games. He got yanked against the Stars in the 1st period, and then he allowed 4 goals against the Sharks in his last outing. No, that isn’t very Holtby like, as he’s a snag along with the rest of the team. I’m not too worried about this team, though.
All they should be worrying about is how they are going to get past the Penguins in the playoffs. It may very well come down to which goaltender is hotter. And if Holtby plays like this, there is no way they will win a series against the Pens.
The Capitals will have another go at it tonight against the LA Kings. The Kings are looking to find the playoffs, and will need a strong push the rest of the way to make it happen. They are currently 32-28-3, but have the benefit of playing in the weaker Western Conference. The Kings are 3 points back of a wildcard spot.
Considering they are hovering around the .500 mark, they have to be feeling rather fortunate. The Blues are currently in control of the final wildcard. This should be a good one in the nightcap. Let’s forget about pick last night, and search for a winning pick in our Capitals vs. Kings selection for Saturday night.
Washington Capitals vs. L.A. Kings Pick
The Capitals have to get back to basics. The basics for them is playing very good, sound hockey on both ends of the ice. It starts with a suffocating defence, which translates into the playmakers making coin on offence. It’s possible that they hit a switch and it all comes back again. I am confident in saying that they’re going to get hot again, soon. They are still 3rd in goals per game and 1st in goals allowed per game, and more importantly, a record of 44-15-2.
The Kings have had problems sustaining long, successful runs. They will a game here or there, and then lose. LA won a Stanley Cup as a low-seed not too long ago, so who knows if they can find that same magic again. This will be their fourth in a row at home, after wins over the Predators and Leafs, and a loss to the Canucks. The Kings have had issues finding offense, as they’re 24th in the NHL in that regard.
They have scored just 2.20 goals per game in their last ten games, it’s been pretty consistent. I am not chasing the Capitals, I don’t advise anybody chasing any bet. The Caps have lost three games in a row only once this season, and I don’t see it happening tonight. Our Saturday night NHL pick is going to be with the Capitals.
