Capitals vs. Penguins Pick – NHL February 17th

Good game tonight between the Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins. They take game of the night honors for Tuesday night in the NHL. The Capitals have been a bit of a surprise this season, as they have played pretty good hockey for the majority of it. Can we take them seriously in the playoffs? I really have to say no given their history. Nevertheless, the Caps have been a balanced team this year that hasn’t just been getting it done on the back of Alexander Ovechkin. Ovechkin is obviously the catalyst of the Capitals this season, but it wouldn’t be possible without his support cast. Most notably the defense that has really stepped it up in 2014/15. I know it is hard to look at the Capitals from no other angle but offensively considering they have one of the best offensive players in the NHL. But the Capitals aren’t where they are today because of the offense alone, their defense has played well to propel them to a 30-17-10 record. They are right there with their rivals, the Penguins, who enter with a mark of 32-15-9. The Pens have a pretty solid record thus far this season, but they haven’t seemed as dominant as we have come to know from Sidney Crosby and company. Him and Ovechkin will meet once again tonight in a matchup that features two of the best in the league.

Absolute horse shit last night. Pardon my french, but get out of here Bruins. A 3 goal lead against the Calgary Flames and they couldn’t hold on. In previous years hearing the Bruins blow a 3 goal lead was unheard of. Even this season it is pretty mind boggling that they pissed that game away. To make it a greater kick to the balls the Flames went on to score in OT with 2 seconds remaining to complete the comeback, and defeat the Bruins 4-3. Unbelievable.

Washington Capitals @ Pittsburgh Penguins

Whenever the Capitals and Penguins get together it provides for good theater. The Canadian vs. Russian where two of the most recognizable names in the NHL go head to head. The Penguins have of course had the upper-hand as far as the Crosby/Ovechkin rivalry goes. Crosby has a Stanley Cup ring to show for it while Ovechkin is still looking for one. In international play Crosby has the gold medals to throw back at Ovie. Is it time for Ovechkin to shine at the highest level and take this team to a Stanley Cup? Given how close NHL teams have been in talent they certainly have a chance. This will be the Caps fourth game on their road trip, their last game coming out winners in a 5-3 victory over the Anaheim Ducks. They will look for that momentum to carry over into Pittsburgh tonight. The Capitals have featured a fierce defense lately, allowing only 2.10 goals per game in their last ten games. And the Penguins offensive woes have continued, scoring only 2.20 goals in that same span.

There is a trend that sticks out in this game which is on the UNDER. The Capitals and Penguins have played to the UNDER in four straight games. Along with the Capitals recent strong defensive efforts on the ice, the Penguins have been playing well in that department as well, allowing only 2.30 goals a game. We look for this matchup trend to continue, and look for their recent strong play on the defensive side coming through. Take the UNDER 5.5 tonight after a hard beat last night.

Pick – UNDER 5.5 GOALS (-125) (Best Odds)
