Capitals vs. Red Wings Pick – NHL April 5th

As we head into the final week of the regular season I need to make a public service announcement about betting the NHL. Make sure you are aware of the implications regarding each game. There are some that might be must wins while others don’t mean anything. In other words, betting the NHL this time of year can be tricky. Likewise, I am lowering my units bet per game before the beginning of the playoffs. I usually have productive playoffs that turn out profits, so I am going to make sure I have a full bankroll for the next two months. Now on to the action today, and a game that has massive playoff implications. The Washington Capitals and Red Wings are both looking to hold on to their spots as they try and fend off a host of teams. The Wings are currently tied with the Bruins at 95 points for 7th in the Eastern Conference. They are also looking to possess 3rd place in the Atlantic Division. The Senators are hot on the heels of the Wings and Bruins, who with a win in OT last night, move to 92 points. So, they could still definitely find a way in if the Wings or Bruins slip up.

This is an important game for the Capitals as well. With 97 points they can’t afford to fall back either. The Wings snapped a three game skid last night with a 3-2 win over the Minnesota Wild. It was only their third win in ten games. With that said, the Wings have been showing signs of slipping up already. What will do them in is if they continue to plummet. A win here would go a long way for the Wings. However, it would have been nice for them if it was a day off for the Sens. Things are going to be get real interesting quickly if Detroit loses today and Ottawa beats the Leafs, which should be an easy win for them. The Wings’ game today doesn’t look like a walk in the park, so buckle up and get ready for a day of some great hockey.

Washington Capitals @ Detroit Red Wings

I took the Capitlals in this last meeting between the Capitals and Red Wings. The Caps were getting plus money at home against the Wings which didn’t add up to me. Surely enough we cashed the bet in. Little different circumstances today as the Wings enter as the favorites. The Capitals have been playing well on offense lately, but their defense has been regressing. While they are scoring, there have been far too many games recently where they’ve allowed 3+ goals. Note that the Capitals are allowing an average of 3.2 goals in their last five games. Not awful, but definitely above the league average. They were, though, scoring 4 goals per game so it evened out and they have been winning more than losing. Consequently, goals have been plentiful. The OVER has gone 5-0 in those five games.

This is a series that typically sees a lot of goals. I took the Capitals last time and it went UNDER, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we see goals today. Both are playing on back-to-backs which tends to lead to sloppy play on the defensive end. Despite the last meeting going UNDER, the OVER hit in six straight games. Not a big play, or even regular size play for me, it’s a small bet, but let’s to take advantage of this trend.
