Columbus Blue Jackets vs. Washington Capitals Pick – NHL December 4, 2021

The Columbus Blue Jackets and Washington Capitals are scheduled on the ice at Capital One Arena tonight. The Blue Jackets are coming off a 3-2 loss to the Dallas Stars on Thursday night. They went into the 3rd period at 3-2 and that’s how the game would end. Tough break for the OVER backers in that spot.

It’s hard to avoid beats like that if you are betting on the NHL regularly. That goes for any sport. If you’re new to sports betting, just forget about it as quickly as possible and move on. That’s part of the game. And if you’re a sports betting veteran, you have stories to tell about unfortunate beats.

If you’re the Blue Jackets, they have to pick themselves up and get back on the winning track. They are on a three-game losing streak going into Saturday night, which came after a three-game winning streak. The Jackets also had wins in five of their previous six outings before going on the skid.

They are going into Washington with a record of 12-9-0 and 24 points. This gives the Blue Jackets a ten-point deficit in the Metropolitan Division. The Capitals are at 14-4-6 and 34 points for a point advantage on the New York Rangers. Suddenly the Hurricanes are reeling after leading the division for the majority of the year.

That’s going to happen to any team. The good ones know how to react well and get back on track. Carolina is going to get back on track tonight? They have the Buffalo Sabres in Raleigh this evening. The Caps are coming off a 4-3 loss in a shootout to the Chicago Blackhawks.

It’s their second straight loss after beating the Hurricanes on November 28, 4-2. They came back to blow a lead to the Florida Panthers in a 5-4 loss, and then their effort versus the Hawks.

The Caps had to be a bit rattled after giving up 4 goals in the 3rd period to lose. We’ll see if they’re over it tonight.

Blue Jackets vs. Capitals Prediction:

The Washington Capitals need to get a better effort on the blueline and between the pipes than we’ve seen recently. They are capable clearly, but the Panthers and Blackhawks were able to exploit holes in the Washington defense.

The 3 goals that the Blackhawks scored in regulation was the fifth time in their last six outings that a team has scored 3 goals on their defense. They’ve allowed an average of 3.66 goals per game in their previous six games. That’s up from an overall mark of 2.5 goals against per game this season.

Ilya Samsonov goes into tonight with a 2.52 GAA and 0.915 save percentage. He’s allowed at least 3 goals in three of his previous four attempts. In his last start, Samsonov gave up 5 goals on 51 shots for a 0.902 save percentage. 51 shots? Yeah, the defense must do a much better job of giving him a chance.

Columbus Blue Jackets vs. Washington Capitals Betting Trends:

Blue Jackets

  • 4-1 overall in their previous five games after scoring less than 2 goals
  • OVER is 7-3 in their previous ten games as an underdog
  • OVER is 6-2 in their previous six games on the road
  • OVER is 11-3 in their previous 14 games
  • OVER is 5-0 in their previous five games versus the Eastern Conference

  • 7-1 overall in their previous eight games versus the Eastern Conference
  • OVER is 5-0-1 in their previous six games
  • OVER is 4-0 in their previous four games as a favorite at Capital One Arena
  • OVER is 5-0 in their previous five games at Capital One Arena
  • OVER is 3-0-1 in their previous five games on one-day rest

The Blue Jackets have been playing a bit more up-tempo under head coach Brad Larsen. This isn’t the same style that the Blue Jackets employed when John Tortorella was the bench boss. They are in the top-10 with 3.2 goals scored per game, but with that, they are giving up chances defensively.

Columbus is 25th in the NHL with 3.2 goals against per game. They are giving up too many Grade A scoring chances around the crease.

The Blue Jackets have conceded 34.5 shots per game. That’s way too many, as Columbus is 31st in the league in that regard.

Giving up that many chances to the Capitals isn’t going to work. Washington is fifth in the league with 3.5 goals scored per game.

At Capital One Arena, they’ve locked in 3.67 goals per game. And in their last ten attempts, they’ve scored 3.7 goals per contest. This one should go OVER the total tonight.
