The Arizona Coyotes head into St. Louis trying to get their season under control. Call it the curse of Shane Doan or what have you, but the Coyotes have been putrid thus far in 2017-18. Doan retired this past offseason, after the Coyotes didn’t offer him a contract. The 41-year-old was then left with a decision to retire or try and catch on with another team.
I’m not sure how much attention he got from other teams, probably not much, but you have to believe he wouldn’t have turned down an offer from the Coyotes. Doan, who came into the league in 1995, played his entire career with the organization. The first year with the Jets, and then to Arizona when the franchise moved. There are certainly no hard feelings between the Yotes and Doan, but this start has almost looked like a curse for them so far.
Arizona have looked like the worst team in the NHL. It’s early, though, and there is plenty of time for them to find a way out of the hole. The talent level on the Coyotes is not going to make it an easy chore, however. While the Coyotes are sitting in the basement of the NHL, the Blues are all the way on top. The Coyotes come into St. Louis with a record of 2-13-2, while the Blues are at 12-3-1.
If there’s anything for the Coyotes to celebrate, it’s the fact that Tobias Rieder snapped a long scoring drought. He didn’t have a goal in thirteen games, but managed to pot one against the Penguins in what was a losing effort, 3-1. When you’re playing this badly, you try to look for anything to jumpstart a roster. I believe it’s going to take much more than Rieder finding the back of the net finally. Arizona Coyotes vs. St. Louis Blues Pick
The Coyotes have a couple of wins this year, one coming against the Hurricanes in a shootout and another against the Flyers in overtime. In other words, even when they won, the Yotes barely got there. There hasn’t been one particular thing you can point to that has been going badly for the Coyotes. Rather, it’s a whole slew of issues in Arizona. They’re getting mauled on defence, allowing a staggering 4 goals per game. Over the course of seventeen games, that’s embarrassingly bad and puts them at 30th in the NHL. Likewise, there has been a lack of firepower, with just 2.41 goals per game, 28th in the league.
Even when the Coyotes were an okay team, the Blues have had their number consistently. Jake Allen has thrown up a wall against them, posting a 1.00 GAA and 0.961 save percentage. On top of that, he is a perfect 7-0-0. The last ten meetings between the Coyotes and Blues has resulted in a 10-0-0 record for the Blues.
During that span, the Blues have outscored the Coyotes by a whopping margin of 43 to 13! And again, this was during a time when the Coyotes were an average team. Average is much better than the dumpster fire we’ve seen in 2017. Overall this year, Arizona have gone 1-8-1 on the road, while the Blues are 6-1-0 at home. All of this points to an easy Blues’ victory on Thursday night.
