The fans in Arizona must be elated for this game tonight, as their Arizona Coyotes take on the St. Louis Blues on the road tonight. Maybe all three of their fans are excited, okay not even people that characterize themselves as Coyote fans are looking forward to hockey. I am sure one thing they are excited about is the weather in Arizona. Boston residents will give you some quality hockey for another month or so in exchange for 80 degree weather I am sure. As irrelevant as the Coyotes have been in the young franchises career, there have been some in there where they have had a decent team. This season, however, is bordering on their worst in the teams history. The fans don’t care out there in Arizona, and the players have seemed to give up on this team as well. There are quality players like Keith Yandle that has been with the Coyotes his whole career, that have been rotting their careers away in the desert. But hey, the weather sure is nice in Arizona during winters.
St. Louis doesn’t have quite as nice of weather this time of the year, but do they ever have a good hockey team that is head and shoulders above the team in Arizona. The Blues are on a major tear at the moment and are showing no indications of slowing down. They were playing great hockey last season, but since losing in the 1st round of last years playoffs, the Blues have looked on a mission in 2014-15. With a lack of success in the post-season in recent memory, no one is going to take them seriously until they do something there. This team may hold their own in the regular season, but haven’t been able to make that next step. Considering the way the Blues are playing today, and especially how well Brian Elliot has been in net for them, it would be an epic collapse if they get bounced again this season.
Arizona Coyotes @ St. Louis Blues
Brian Elliot earned his way to the All-Star Game a few weeks ago and is was definitely well deserved. For the Blues to make a big run in the playoffs they are going to need to get solid production out of him as we hit April. It usually takes one hot goalie to make it to the finals and Elliot has show, thus far anyway, that he is capable of doing that. It would be new to him, so we’ll see how things transgress in the near future. The Blues have been making it work on offense as well, note that they are averaging 3.06 goals per game. That is 3rd in the NHL, the Blues weren’t putting up these good of numbers on offense last season, so it is a nice counter-balance to their strong defense. The Blues are also one of the most difficult teams to beat at home in the NHL. They enter with a record of 20-5-1-1 in that respect.
The Coyotes are a team that the Blues have been pummeling lately. St. Louis is 8-2 against them in their last eight games, and are currently on a three game winning streak against Arizona. In all three of those games the Blues beat them by more than a goal including 6-0 and 6-1 beatdowns in the last two games. The Yotes have had their problems containing opposing squads on both ends of the ice. They are letting in 3.23 goals per game, which leads to them being the 28th ranked defense in the NHL. They don’t make up for it on offense either, coming into St. Louis tonight earning only 2.24 goals per game for 24th in the NHL. All indications are another big win for the Blues over the Coyotes. The Blues can’t be feeling great after losing to the Blackhawks on national television on Sunday and should be able to take their frustrations out on the Coyotes. I will lay the -1.5 on the Blues to beat the Arizona Coyotes by more than 1 goal.
