Whoa, I haven’t whiffed that badly all season long, but last night was a train wreck as the Dallas Stars blew the San Jose Sharks off the ice. A lot of the losses I’ve had this season have been near misses, but last night was anything of the sort.
The Sharks are officially in a rut after five straight losses. They didn’t even care last night, but like I said, better for it to happen now than in the playoffs. We move on to Saturday, where there is a full slate of action and hopefully find a winning pick. In particular, we go to Washington D.C. where the Capitals and Coyotes have a business meeting at Verizon Center.
For the Capitals, the rest of the season is nothing more than a road to pad their playoff seeding. They’re going to be in the playoffs, that is a given. The only question will be what position they’ll be starting from.
Currently, the Capitals are 1st in the NHL, ahead of the Penguins by 1 point and 3 points on the Blue Jackets. Of course, if the Caps win the 1st overall seed and get the President’s Trophy again, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s going to translate in the playoffs.
The Capitals were the team to be a year ago, but Sidney Crosby and the Pens ultimately hoisted the hardware. With their failures in the postseason, it’s going to be difficult to find too many people who have the Capitals ousting the Penguins this year. I will say one thing, though, the Caps’ defence has been much better than the Pens this season. So, if there is anything that they can lean on in the playoffs it’s going to be Holtby and the defence.
Arizona Coyotes vs. Washington Capitals Pick
The Coyotes are waiting for the season to end, they have their vacations booked already and want to get done with this year. The Coyotes enter with a record of 27-38-7 and would be better served to just tank to improve their position in the draft. Beating the best team in the NHL is a nice opportunity, though, which they will have the opportunity to do tonight. The last time the Yotes and Caps played, Arizona staged the upset with a 3-0 win last April.
The Coyotes are not playing quality hockey of late though, as they’ve dropped four of their last five outings. That win was against the Tampa Bay Lightning, so they are capable of coming to life occasionally. The Yotes are allowing 3.16 goals per game for 27th in the league.
In their last ten games, they’ve scored 2.20 goals per game, versus 2.70 goals allowed. Conversely, the Capitals are tops in the NHL by a good margin defensively, allowing only 2.15 goals per game this season. You can find them at 3rd in the NHL on offence. By all accounts, the Capitals shouldn’t face many issues against Arizona tonight. Nothing will be working in their favor tonight. The Capitals flex their muscles and put a beating on display. Our Coyotes vs. Capitals pick is on the Caps to win by 2 or more goals.
PICK: CAPITALS -1.5 (-105)
