Coyotes vs. Devils Pick – NHL February 23rd

Only two games on the schedule tonight in the NHL. There is an early game and then a late night matchup in California between the Red Wings and Ducks. The early game features an exciting affair where the 20-32-2 Arizona Coyotes meet up with the 24-26-3 New Jersey Devils. It means one thing. The only people tuned into this one will be hardcore fans and people with money on the game. I tend to think that the ratings for this game will be bumped up by gamblers. There may not even be that many people with money on this game besides degenerates. Well, call me a degenerate, because I am looking that way tonight.

The Red Wings and Ducks should provide the better game for watchability, with much more on the line, however I don’t put money on games just because it is going to be entertaining. Rather I look to make money. If the Yotes and Devils give me the best opportunity to win money ill do it. I can’t say I love this game, it’ll be a regular size wager. The Coyotes travel north not to avoid the nice weather, but where they look to break out of an awful funk that involves a five game losing streak. The Devils are still hanging around with an outside shot of making the playoffs. Every game from here on out is important for them.

I can’t see them doing that. They’ll need a terrific end to the season. However, lately they have been on the right track in that regard. They are on a three game winning streak, knocking the Sabres, Canucks, and Hurricanes off. They are moderate to heavy favorites in this game, as I see it now they are at -180. The Devils should present a much more inspired effort at home tonight and the odds certainly reflect that. With both teams lack of scoring, this game will probably be won on the defensive side. We’ll see how it unfolds tonight in New Jersey, as the Coyotes and Devils kick start Monday night in the NHL.

Arizona Coyotes @ New Jersey Devils

This season would be a different story for the Devils if they had a resemblance of an offense. Their defense has held opposing teams at bay considerably well, but the way their offense has performed has hindered a chance at a sure fire playing seed. The Devils enter tonight as the 27th best offense in the NHL. 2.19 goals per game just isn’t good enough regardless of what the defense is doing. Holding teams to under 2 goals all of the time is nearly impossible, so the faults in the Devils are easy to note. They’re 11th in defense, allowing teams an average of 2.58 goals per game. Of late the Devils have been living up to their billing in full. Actually, the defense has been playing even better than their overall numbers indicate. In their last ten games the Devils have given up only 2.10 goals a game. Again though, when your offense is only lighting the lamp 2.20 in that same stretch it isn’t the best formula on the ice.

I think that formula will be enough to beat the Coyotes. Most notably, they should be able to garner enough goals to make it past their offense. The Coyotes are tied with the Devils offensively, netting the puck 2.19 times on average. But lately they haven’t shown much of any life in that department, where they’ve scored only 1.90 goals in their last ten games. In their last five it hasn’t improved any, but have been trending downward with 1.60 goals a game. They didn’t eclipse 2 goals in any of those games. I see this as something along the lines of a 3-1 Devils win. I am not going to pay the juice of -180, but I think it’ll be low scoring nonetheless. Look for the UNDER 5 to hit tonight.

Pick – UNDER 5 GOALS (-103) (Best Odds)
