After a big winner Friday night with the Vancouver Canucks, we’re back at it Sunday here at The Sports Geek. We enter a busy Sunday slate of games with an impressive 17-7 on our featured picks, and we’ll look for that to continue until the end of April. Today’s focused game takes place in Calgary, Alberta where the Phoenix Coyotes will travel to take on the Flames.
Phoenix Coyotes (-110) @ Calgary Flames (-110)
Despite a line-up that lacks some high-end talent, credit always needs to be given to the pesky Phoenix Coyotes. Coach Dave Tippett has this team playing good hockey yet again in 2013, and they’ll look to keep things going against a Flames squad that sits 14th in the Western Conference.
The ‘Yotes enter this contest fresh off a disappointing shootout loss in Edmonton, but they were the better team throughout. Their team-play, speed, and tenacity should give a disoragnized Flames’ squad fits. Add in the fact that Calgary’s goaltending is still a messy situation, and look for the Coyotes to leave the province of Alberta with a win. Calgary’s star netminder Miikka Kiprusoff remains out with a knee injury, and it remains to be seen how much longer the tandem of Joey MacDonald and Danny Taylor can man the fort.
Phoenix beat Calgary this past Monday night by a score of 4-0 on home ice, and will look to duplicate those results tonight. The Coyotes have just gotten Matthew Lombardi back from injury, and the speedy centreman will help Phoenix’s depth down the middle. While they’re still battling their fair share of injuries, expect the Coyotes to be the better team in this contest. Calgary’s penalty-kill continues to be their achilles heel in 2013, falling to second last in the league in that department. Phoenix will make them pay. Look for a close game, but ultimately one that seems a well-coached Coyotes team prevail.
PICK = Phoenix (-110)
