Coyotes vs. Rangers NHL Pick – December 14th

The Arizona Coyotes take a short flight from Buffalo to NYC, where they will meet their second opponent of a brief three-game road trip in the east. They’ve already suffered losses against the Bruins and Sabres on the road, along with two games at home before leaving Arizona. They’ll be looking to avoid a five-game losing streak at Madison Square Garden tonight. Despite their struggles recent, there can’t be much criticism regarding the Yotes.

They’ve been a team playing in the basement of the league the past several seasons and have just started to build their team around a young core. It’s likely going to take baby steps to get the Coyotes back to the playoffs. If they do happen to score Auston Matthews, that’d give them more than a baby step, but let’s be realistic and expect that doesn’t come to fruition.

The most realistic scenario is that the Leafs get a deal done with him. Pairing Matthews with Clayton Keller sure would be nice, though, who would eventually be Olympic teammates on Team USA if the NHL plays in Beijing.

The 20-year-old Keller leads his team in points with 21 points. That’s great for a guy his age, but the organization would certainly like to see some more points from other players. The next closest is Oliver Ekman-Larsson with 16 points. he is 27 and Derek Stepan is 28, so their next top point getters are likely not going to be here for when Keller is in his prime. The Rangers are in rebuild mode, but have been getting by and holding their heads above .500. Head below for our free Coyotes vs. Rangers pick.

The Coyotes were unable to get their offence going last night, which has been a recurring theme for them. If Keller has an off night, then the rest of the team doesn’t do much either. Keller is tied with Brad Richardson for the lead in goals with only 8. In comparison, Alexander Ovechkin has already scored 25 goals. Keller has 21 points and the league leader, Mikko Rantanen, has 52 points.

As a team, the Coyotes are 29th with an average of 2.53 goals scored per game. With all of that in mind, it’s amazing that the Coyotes are at 13-15-2. The Coyotes will likely start Adin Hill in net. He’s been getting playing time in the absence of Antti Raanta. The loss of Raanta stings, but it’s a benefit to Hill who saw four appearances as a rookie a season ago. He finished with a 3.49 GAA and has improved on that drastically with a 1.62 GAA in seven showings this season.

His latest outings haven’t been great, though. He gave up 3 goals to the Caps and then the Sharks scored 4 on him in a 5-3 game. You have to expect some variance for Hill after starting out this season on fire. The Rangers have been a good team at home this season with a record of 10-4-0.

They’ve spent four of their last five games on the road. Their most recent game in NYC was a missed opportunity, as they coughed away a 3-0 lead in the 3rd period to fall 4-3 to the Jets in a shootout. The Rangers have scored an average of 3 goals per game, while Lundqvist has been at his best here. Note that he owns a 2.06 GAA and 0.936 save percentage at MSG in 2018-19. The offensively deficient Coyotes should be easy for him to handle. The Rangers likely get the win, while the Coyotes drop their fifth in a row and second in two nights.
