It’s Martin Luther King Day, so there is some afternoon action across the NHL and NBA. There’s only one night game in the NHL, as the Islanders and Canadiens meet in Montreal. Monday begins with a matchup featuring the Dallas Stars and Boston Bruins. We’re heading there for our pick on Monday. The Bruins have been playing fantastic hockey through the first-half of the season.
They’ve been better than expected, and put themselves right back in Stanley Cup discussions. The Bruins won the Cup in 2011 behind Tim Thomas in net. They made it back in 2013, but were defeated by the Chicago Blackhawks. Since that trip to the Stanley Cup Final, the Bruins haven’t been awfully relevant. They certainly haven’t been a bad team, but they’ve struggled to be a playoff contender. With a record of 24-10-5 this season, the Bruins appear to be back on the right track.
The welcome the Stars to Boston on MLK Day. The Stars are neither here nor there. You can’t say they’re a good team, but they aren’t a bad team, either. They are stuck influx between being a playoff team or sitting out. The Stars hold a record of 24-17-2. Something like that would work in the NBA, but mediocre records do not get rewarded in the NHL.
If the playoffs were to begin today, they’d have the final wildcard, but seven games above .500 probably won’t be good enough come the spring. There’s talent to be had on the Stars’ roster with Seguin, Benn, Klingberg, and others. They just have a problem of staying consistent. The Stars’ defence must be on their toes Monday afternoon. They’re playing a hot Bruin offence that has been lighting the red light with ease lately. The Bruins have won nine of their last ten games with the only loss coming on the road in Pittsburgh. Dallas have won six of their last ten. Head below for our free Stars vs. Bruins pick.
Dallas Stars vs. Boston Bruins Pick
The Bruins rallied back to defeat the Canadiens, 4-3, in a shootout on Saturday. The team hasn’t lost in regulation since December 14th against the Washington Capitals. Conversely, the Stars 3 3rd period goals to the Avalanche to drop a 4-1 decision on Saturday. Ben Bishop faced only 22 shots, but gave up 3 to bury the hatchet. You can’t blame the Dallas defence for that one, Bishop just had a bad night. We can often put the blame on the Stars’ defence, but not that time. The Bruins have scored 15 goals on the Stars in their last three meetings.
In the Bruins last three games overall, they’ve scored 16 goals. In their last five games they averaged 5.2 goals per game. And in six of their last seven, they have scored at least 4 goals or more. Bishop holds a 2.82 GAA and 0.91 save percentage against the Bruins in his career. He’s going to need to be much better than he was against the Avs. Play like that and the Bruins will put up 6 on the board. I don’t know if they’re going to score 6 this afternoon, but the Stars’ offence will need to play keep-up in this game. They’ve been playing reasonably well in that regard, with 3.3 goals scored per in their last ten outings. I’d take a look at the OVER to get your afternoon started on Martin Luther King Day.
PICK: OVER 5.5 (-110)
