DraftKings NHL Picks – December 29th

There is nothing quite like a 12-game NHL slate to get me excited! Tonight’s slate provides plenty of options on the draft board so let’s see what tonight’s DraftKings NHL picks look like!

C – Tyler Seguin (DAL) – $7,600

Seguin and the Stars have a mouth-watering matchup on their hands this evening. The Colorado Avalanche bring their NHL-worst record, defense, and offense to town in what could be a big game for the big boys up front for Dallas. Colorado gives up 3.26 goals per game this season and also boasts the league’s 25th ranked penalty kill at 78.7%. Seguin has 34 points and 125 shots on the season to crack the top ten in the league in both categories. He is a must-have tonight.

C – Tyler Johnson (TB) – $5,200

With Nikita Kucherov and Ondrej Palat both returning to the lineup last night the line knows as “the triplets” single-handedly won the game against the visiting Canadiens. Johnson chipped in two assists and four shots in over 19 minutes of action. He figures to have another opportunity for success tonight against a visiting Maple Leafs team that played in Florida last night and can certainly be leaky on the back end at times.

W – Jamie Benn (DAL) – $7,200

As mentioned above, the big boys for Dallas could be in for a big night. That certainly includes Benn as the ’14/’15 Art Ross Trophy winner has 30 points in 36 games this year and nine points in his last ten contests. The power forward averages over 20 minutes of ice time per game and plays in every situation for Lindy Ruff’s Stars. Roll both Benn and Seguin with confidence against the NHL’s worst team tonight.

W – Alex Chiasson (CGY) – $3,800

Chiasson is mired in an eight-game pointless drought, however he will line up next to Johnny Gaudreau and Sam Bennett for tonight’s tilt against the Ducks. Chiasson does have offensive instincts and recorded a goal and two helpers the last time the Ducks came to town back on December 4th. He should be able to provide this lineup with some value with his positioning on the team’s top line tonight.

W – Marcus Johansson (WSH) – $5,200

Johansson and the Capitals will face one of the league’s worst road teams tonight as the New Jersey Devils come to town. New Jersey’s four road wins are the second-worst mark in the league are a reflection of the 3.19 goals per game they surrender on the road. Johansson always gets a solid opportunity in a top-six role for the Capitals as he will line up next to Nicklas Backstrom and T.J. Oshie at even strength while maintaining his spot on the team’s lethal number one power play unit.

D – Erik Karlsson (OTT) – $7,000

Arguably the league’s top offensive defenseman, Karlsson’s 32 points trails only Brent Burns of the Sharks and his 34 points. Karlsson will take on a Red Wings team tonight who is having perhaps their most disappointing season in the last two and a half decades. Detroit has struggled in the goal prevention department with 2.89 goals per game which is good for 22nd in the league. That number jumps to 3.13 on the road and I’m of the opinion that Karlsson will be back on the scoresheet again tonight after recording four points over his last four games.

D – Jordie Benn (DAL) – $3,500

If you draft one Benn why not draft both? Jordie doesn’t have quite the offensive skills that his brother Jamie brings to the table, but he’s no slouch either. Benn has ten points in 33 contests this year and is a monster in the shot-blocking department with 64 blocks on the year. Jordie also sees time on the Stars’ second power play group which could come in handy against the 25th ranked Avalanche penalty kill.

G – James Reimer (FLA) – $7,100

We have a value play in goal tonight as well. Reimer isn’t the sexiest goalie on the draft board, but a closer look and you might like what you see. He has allowed two goals or less in three of his last five starts and three goals or less in all five. What might surprise you is that he faces a Canadiens team tonight who are actually one of the worst road scoring teams in the league. Montreal scores just 2.26 goals per game on the road compared to 3.6 at home. They also played last night in Tampa Bay while Reimer had the night off despite hosting Toronto last night. He isn’t without risk, but he could provide quite a bit of value this evening.

UTIL – Devin Setoguchi (LA) – $3,400

Setoguchi’s best days as a goal scorer are well behind him, but he has a chance to provide this lineup some more value tonight on the road against the Oilers. Setoguchi has the pleasure of flanking Jeff Carter on the right wing again tonight. Carter has been red-hot for the Kings and it’s possible that could rub off on the veteran winger tonight. He has 40 shots on the season and nine over his last four games.
