It wasn’t a great night for our DraftKings NHL Picks, especially considering the night Jonathan Quick had. The Stars stack did plenty of damage, but Quick yielded five goals on just 18 shots which just blew the lineup apart, although it wasn’t terribly productive prior to that game. Let’s rebound and get into the money on tonight’s two-game slate.
C – Auston Matthews (TOR) – $7,400 vs. CHI
Matthews tends to score goals in bunches, and it appears he is doing that as we speak. Matthews has tallied a goal in each of his last two games, and should have had three if it weren’t for a brutal goalie interference review that took his goal away. Nonetheless, Matthews already has 21 tucks in his sophomore season across just 39 games and should be in for some more looks against a suspect Blackhawks’ defense and Jeff Glass in goal.
C – Jonathan Toews (CHI) – $6,200 vs. TOR
The Maple Leafs will be missing their top two defenseman for tonight’s contest in Chicago, so I expect some offense from the Blackhawks tonight. Toews hasn’t tallied a point across his last five games, but his ownership should fall under Nick Schmaltz and the Patrick Kane line, so let’s roster the veteran pivot here. He still has 14 goals and 31 points on the season and has taken 137 shots on goal to boot.
W – William Nylander (TOR) – $6,300 vs. CHI
Of course with Matthews comes Nylander. The super-skilled winger flanks Matthews at both 5v5 and on one of the Maple Leafs’ power play units. He got off a three-game pointless drought with an assist on Monday, however Nylander has tallied nine shots over his last two games and is has been real dangerous as of late. Look for the duo to create some chances tonight against the Blackhawks and Glass who owns a 3.31 GAA and .902 Sv% on home ice this season.
W – Anthony Duclair (CHI) – $4,400 vs. TOR
As expected, Duclair has been thrust into a top-six role since coming over in a trade from the Coyotes, and that role has him skating with Toews at both 5v5 and on the man advantage. He’s been held pointless for three straight games, but Duclair has the speed and skill level that could give a very young and inexperienced Leafs’ defense fits tonight on the road. Lots of value to be had here.
W – Tyler Toffoli (LA) – $5,200 vs. CGY
I don’t expect a lot of offense tonight in Calgary, but if there is some I am banking on Toffoli being involved for the Kings. He is always a scoring threat with 149 shots on the season, 18 of which have found the back of the net. He hasn’t tallied a point across his last six games, but skating on the second line and top power play unit, it shouldn’t be very long at all before Toffoli finds the scoresheet again.
D – Duncan Keith (CHI) – $5,200 vs. TOR
With Keith we have a three-man Blackhawks stack locked in and also a three-man power play stack as well. Keith enters play tonight amazingly without a goal across 111 shots for the season. He has racked up 22 helpers on the year and is the quarterback of that power play unit alongside Toews and Duclair. He logs plenty of ice with at least 24 minutes in each of his last five games so expect Keith to be involved offensively this evening.
D – Connor Carrick (TOR) – $3,300 vs. CHI
Carrick usually isn’t worth a spot in a lineup, but without Morgan Rielly in the Leafs’ lineup Carrick has been placed on the same power play unit that Matthews and Nylander reside on. His ice time has increased as a result to over 20 minutes in two of his last four games while he has scored a goal on seven shots over his last two. He could provide some real nice value at this price while skating with the Leafs’ big guns.
G – Darcy Kuemper (LA) – $7,500 vs. CGY
After winning seven-straight games and scoring plenty of goals, the Calgary Flames have lost back-to-back games while scoring just one goal in each of those contests. The Kings were smacked 6-2 last night in Vancouver, but Kuemper yielded just one goal in over 30 minutes of action in that game. He should get the start tonight for the NHL’s second best defense as he carries a real nice .931 Sv% into this game against the Kings’ Pacific Division rivals.
UTIL – Tanner Pearson (LA) – $4,300 vs. CGY
Pearson and Toffoli form a nice mini-stack on the Kings’ second line tonight in Calgary. Mike Smith and the Flames’ defense has been real good as of late, but if this game goes low scoring and this duo teams up for offense, we are well covered in this lineup. Pearson enters play tonight with nine goals and 26 points on 105 shots for the campaign and has one goal, a power play marker, on six shots over his last two contests.
