DraftKings NHL Picks – January 5th

Happy Friday everyone! It’s time to ring in some profits as we head into the weekend. We have a five-game slate to take on so let’s get to it!

C – Blake Wheeler (WPG) – $7,500 vs. BUF

With 47 points in 41 games Wheeler continues to be one of the lesser talked about superstars in the game. With Mark Scheifele out of the lineup, Wheeler has moved to the center ice position, a spot where he has thrived. He has scored four goals over his last three contests including two goals on nine shots in his most recent game in Colorado. Tonight he takes on the last-place Sabres who yield 3.35 goals per game, good for 29th overall.

C – Nick Schmaltz (CHI) – $4,800 vs. VGK

The Jets stack is pricey tonight, so we will look for some value beginning here with Schmaltz. Schmaltz centers the Blackhawks’s second line alongside Patrick Kane while he also gets a spot with Kane on the top power play unit as well. He enters play tonight red hot with six points over his last four games and takes on a Golden Knights team that ranks 22nd in road defense.

W – Patrik Laine (WPG) – $7,200 vs. BUF

Of course we will include Laine in this lineup considering Wheeler above. Laine moved up to the first line right wing spot vacated by Wheeler moving into the middle. The Finnish sniper has tallied 18 goals for the season, with ten coming on a lethal Jets power play. That power play is clicking at 31.8% for the season on home ice, the second best mark in the league. This pair is a must in cash games and most likely optimal lineups tonight as well.

W – Ryan Hartman (CHI) – $3,700 vs. VGK

Hartman and Schmaltz form an excellent mini-stack tonight against the visiting Golden Knights. They skate with Kane on the second line while we get exposure to both power play units thanks to Hartman’s spot on the second grouping. He has four points over his last four games and I have no problem rostering this duo while they are hot and with excellent exposure to Kane in the process.

W – Jordan Eberle (NYI) – $4,900 vs. PIT

The Penguins are a very poor defensive team on the road and the Islanders are an excellent offensive team at home so let’s get some exposure to this effect tonight. The Islanders’ home offense ranks second at four goals per game and the Penguins’ road defense checks in at 28th at 3.45 goals against per game. Eberle has 14 goals and 15 helpers on the season and has taken eight shots over his last two games. He also has a spot on a potent second power play unit.

D – Dustin Byfuglien (WPG) – $5,100 vs. BUF

Capping the Jets stack tonight is Byfuglien who is still in search of his first goal of the season. Despite not finding the back of the net yet, he is still over a half point per game with 15 helpers across 29 contests. In his second game back Big Buff will regain his spot on the top power play unit, a lethal group thanks to Wheeler and Laine. A very high upside cash stack tonight.

D – Ryan Pulock (NYI) – $3,300 vs. PIT

Pulock is a bit of a wild card play but he has some nice upside at a low cost. He and Eberle form a mini-stack on that second Islanders’ power play unit where Pulock has scored two of his three goals this season. He is an offensive defenseman with a lethal shot and he has demonstrated that at the NHL level with three goals and eight points despite averaging under 17 minutes per game. Nonetheless, the weak Penguins’ defense is a nice matchup for the youngster tonight.

G – Connor Hellebuyck (WPG) – $8,400 vs. BUF

He is the highest priced goaltender on the slate tonight but we will roll with Hellebuyck regardless considering his matchup. At 2.20 goals per game, the Sabres are the NHL’s worst offense while Hellebuyck is an amazing 14-1-1 at home with a 2.19 GAA and a .927 Sv%. The Jets offense should provide plenty of goal support tonight making a win very likely for the breakout netminder tonight.

UTIL – Gustav Nyquist (DET) – $5,100 vs. FLA

Nyquist and the Red Wings get a nice matchup tonight at home against the Panthers. He is having a nice season with 12 goals on 100 shots in 39 games and gets first line minutes as well as a spot on the Red Wings’ top power play group. The Panthers rank 25th with 3.18 goals against per game, a real nice boost to Nyquist’s matchup tonight. Also, backup Harri Sateri could get the start for the Panthers tonight with James Reimer questionable after leaving his last start with an injury.
