Well folks I really hoped you followed last night’s DraftKings NHL picks as you could possibly have taken down a GPP if you did. It was a massive night all around, with Artem Anisimov scoring a hat trick, Dylan Larkin notching a goal and two assists, Andreas Athanasiou scoring two goals with an assist on five shots and Mike Green recorded three assists. Also, Patrick Kane, Cody Franson, Rickard Rakell and combined for six assists and John Gibson got a win while making 40 saves. What an unbelievable night it was so let’s follow that up tonight on the 12-game slate!
C – Logan Couture (SJ) – $6,100 vs. FLA
Couture is in a very favorable spot tonight as the Panthers enter play tonight ranking 30th with 3.76 goals against per game on the season. Couture is having another fantastic season as the Sharks’ top forward this year with ten goals and 15 points including three power play goals, a shorthanded goal and 44 shots to boot. He consistently logs close to 20 minutes of ice time per game which of course his spot on the team’s top power play unit as well.
C – Philip Danault (MON) – $5,000 vs. ARI
Danault should get some serious chances tonight against the Coyotes. He is fortunate to be skating on the teams’ top line with Max Pacioretty, but Danault also sees time on the Canadiens’ second power play unit as well. He is an opportunistic player who does have some offensive flair with 11 points and 43 shots in 19 games this season. He also sees some shorthanded minutes as well which has him skating as many as 20 minutes per night on occasion.
W – Max Pacioretty (MON) – $6,700 vs. ARI
I don’t think the Habs are a good offensive team but like Danault, Pacioretty is a fantastic play tonight considering his opponent and how much this guy shoots the puck. It’s been well documented that Arizona is the league’s worst defense as they give up 3.90 goals per game, and when you throw in the fact Pacioretty leads the NHL with 92 shots on goal you have to think that one or more of those shots will go in tonight. He has fired an enormous 23 shots on goal over his last three games so make sure you get this guy into your lineup tonight.
W – Sven Baertschi (VAN) – $4,200 vs. VGK
Unbelievably, the Golden Knights will see their fifth string goaltender start tonight’s game against the Canucks so it’s also a good idea to grab some Vancouver exposure as well beginning here with Baertschi. With junior-turned-pro goaltender Dylan Ferguson making his first NHL start tonight, Baertschi appears to be in a good spot. He has quietly put up six goals, three power play goals and 13 points in 18 games on the season. He plays on the Canucks’ top line and top power play unit with Bo Horvat and Brock Boeser so let’s go with the lower owned Baertschi tonight.
W – Brock Boeser (VAN) – $4,600 vs. VGK
Real nice price here on Boeser considering his opponent and his production in his rookie season. I touched on the Golden Knights and their goalie issues above, but Boeser’s production is something else. He has tallied five goals, 15 points and 39 shots on the season despite Vancouver being one of the lowest scoring teams in the league. On most nights it’s Boeser’s line that does the damage and I expect that to be the case again tonight.
D – Brent Burns (SJ) – $6,800 vs. FLA
Burns has some serious positive regression coming his way. Despite throwing a whopping 65 shots on goal in 16 games, Burns has yet to find the back of the net. Those 65 shots are the most by a defenseman this season and aside from Burns the player who has the most shots on goal without a goal this season is Oilers’ defenseman Darnell Nurse with 47. The Panthers are a very poor defensive team with weak goaltending as well, so tonight a perfect night for the veteran to get his first goal of the campaign.
D – Michael Del Zotto (VAN) – $3,800 vs. VGK
The three-man Canucks’ stack is complete here with the veteran Del Zotto. I’d like to see his production be a little bit higher than his one goal and six assists considering he logs massive ice time for the Canucks, 23:48 per game to be exact. He’s never been a big shooter, but he is on pace this season to destroy his career high 119 shots on goal with 38 through 18 games on the season. For tonight Del Zotto is a very nice play at low ownership given the large slate.
G – Jonathan Quick (LA) – $8,400 vs. BOS
Quick is my top goalie of the night for a couple of reasons. First, he is playing in front of the league’s second best defense and secondly the Bruins are playing on back-to-back nights and are without Brad Marchand and rookie Anders Bjork once again tonight. Quick is tied for 2nd with a .930 save percentage this season and the Kings also boast the NHL’s top penalty kill at 89.2%. Fairly easy decision here to go with one of the most reliable netminders the NHL has to offer.
UTIL – Bobby Ryan (OTT) – $4,400 vs. PIT
Ryan is a nice one off play tonight as he makes his return from a broken hand against the Penguins. Ryan will be playing with a new center tonight in the form of Matt Duchene who was acquired while Ryan was on the shelf. He has six assists in eight games prior to the injury, so in terms of points per game he was having a nice year. Also, keep in mind that the Penguins have been pretty bad defensively this season, especially on the road as they rank 30th with 4.31 goals against per game away from PPG Paints Arena.
