Last night’s DraftKings NHL picks were certainly a disappointment. We got minimal contributions from Crosby and McDavid while Carey Price was a complete dud in the Canadiens’ crease. We got a goal from Clayton Keller of the Coyotes and it was assisted by a couple of players in the lineup in Domi and Ekman-Larsson, but that would be the only contributions we received from Arizona as well. Let’s move on from last night and tackle tonight’s six-game slate.
C – Sean Monahan (CGY) – $6,900 vs. DAL
Off to a hot start this season, Sean Monahan and the Flames get a favorable matchup tonight on home ice against the visiting Stars. Dallas will be playing their second game in as many nights tonight after dropping a hard fought 5-4 decision to the Oilers last night. This also means backup Kari Lehtonen and his .851 save percentage this season will get the nod in goal for the Stars. Cue the big guns for the Flames beginning here with Monahan who has five goals, eight points and 31 shots on goal through ten games this season while also skating a whopping 4:05 per game on the Flames’ power play.
C – Brandon Dubinsky (CLS) – $3,800 vs. WPG
Dubinsky hasn’t had a great start to the season with just two assists through nine contests, but he had arguably his best game of the season his last time out with an assist on four shots with over 17 minutes of ice time as well. Dubinsky will handle second line center duties in between Boone Jenner and sniper Cam Atkinson tonight and will also get reps on the team’s second unit power play as well. Considering the Jets are yielding 3.50 goals per game, good for 24th, it would be fair to say Dubinsky could be in for some low owned, cheap production tonight.
W – Johnny Gaudreau (CGY) – $7,000 vs. DAL
I don’t have higher hopes for anyone in this lineup than I do for Gaudreau in his matchup with the visiting Stars. “Johnny Hockey” has burst out of the gates with 12 points and 24 shots across ten games this season while getting plenty of valuable power play time next to Monahan as he averages over four minutes of man advantage time as well. With Kari Lehtonen in the Dallas crease tonight look for Monahan and Gaudreau to be one of the top scoring duos on tonight’s slate.
W – Cam Atkinson (CLS) – $6,500 vs. WPG
Another team playing on the road on back-to-back nights tonight is the Winnipeg Jets after their overtime loss in Pittsburgh last night. The Jets get a very tough opponent tonight in the form of the Blue Jackets, a team that has scored 3.33 goals per game (11th) this season. Atkinson has just four points in nine games, but also had 29 shots on goal in that span. It appears Atkinson has been moved down to the second line for tonight’s game, but his spot on the first unit power play remains and his spot on the second line opens up a nice stacking option tonight as well.
W – Boone Jenner (CLS) – $4,700 vs. WPG
Atkinson’s linemate on that second line will be Jenner who will play just his third game of the season tonight against the Jets. Jenner has been held pointless in his first two games, but he has recorded a whopping nine shots on goal during that time which includes second line power play minutes as part of his 17:29 average ice time. Jenner has scored 48 goals over his last two seasons and has averaged 218 shots on goal over the last two years as well, so let’s look for some lower owned production from Jenner at a very reasonable price tonight.
D – Seth Jones (CLS) – $5,100 vs. WPG
Jones is an excellent play tonight thanks to his cross-category production and offensive upside against this Jets team. Jones has recorded two goals, five assists, 26 shots and 18 blocks through his nine games this season. He will skate on the team’s second power play unit alongside Jenner and considering the Jets have killed penalties at just a 75.9% clip (26th), even the second Blue Jackets’ unit tonight looks like they could do some damage. Let’s get the second unit, led by Jones, at lower ownership tonight.
D – T.J. Brodie (CGY) – $4,900 vs. DAL
For a guy who plays as much as Brodie does and his very favorable matchup tonight against the Stars I think we are getting him at an absolute steal at this price tonight. Brodie skates an average of 25:14 per game, which is the fifth highest mark in the NHL, ahead of players like Duncan Keith and just a few seconds behind Drew Doughty. Brodie is also a cross-category contributor with two goals, six assists, 20 shots and 17 blocks through ten games this season. Add in his team-leading 4:12 of power play time per game and we have ourselves an excellent play tonight.
G – Mike Smith (CGY) – $7,600 vs. DAL
The Stars are a team who can score some goal as evidenced by their four in last night’s game in Edmonton, but given they are on back-to-back nights and with the way Smith has played this season I don’t mind this pick at all. I also don’t see a lot of safe options on tonight’s board, so Smith and his .928 save percentage on the season will do. Smith has recorded at least 25.6 FanDuel points in five of his nine starts on the season, should have a real good chance at a win, and could be a lower owned play with some upside tonight against the Stars.
UTIL – Alex DeBrincat (CHI) – $3,400 vs. NSH
Tonight’s value play is in a very nice spot tonight against the visiting Predators. DeBrincat appears to have been promoted to the Blackhawks’ top line with Jonathan Toews and Brandon Saad and also appears on the team’s top power play unit with that duo as well. DeBrincat doesn’t have eye-popping stats with three points and 14 shots through ten games, but he scored 65 goals and 127 points in 63 games last season with the OHL’s Erie Otters, so it scoring won’t be an issue for the diminutive winger moving forward.
