Ducks vs. Capitals NHL Pick – December 16th

The Anaheim Ducks hit the road for the second consecutive game, as they look to find some momentum with back-to-back wins over the Blues and Capitals. They took care of the Blues, 3-1, and now have their eyes set on the Caps. The Ducks acquired Adam Henrique a couple of weeks ago and he has added a much needed offensive punch to a team who desperately needed it. With injuries to Corey Perry and Ryan Kesler, the Ducks desperately needed some help on offence. They made the wise choice by getting Henrique to Anaheim. In seven games with the Ducks, he’s already scored 3 goals and 3 assists. That’s an instant upgrade over their situation before. The Ducks are currently 14-11-3 on the year.

Their 3-1 win over the Blues is how Randy Carlyle would like to go about business. Win games with fundamentally sound hockey based on defence, instead of having to get into high-scoring affairs every night. Nevertheless, their offence was really putrid with Kesler and Perry out, they needed to do something about it and bring in a new forward. They take on a Capitals team tonight who are just about hitting their stride.

The Caps have won eight of their last games, and have been getting a plethora of production from their offence. That’s the way it’s supposed to be with their roster, no surprise there, but they were stuck in mud to start the year out. They’ve also been getting solid performances from Braden Holtby who was slow as well out of the gate. The Ducks could really build some momentum tonight in Washington. Well see what transpires. Head below for our free Ducks vs. Capitals pick.

Anaheim Ducks vs. Washington Capitals Pick

Alexander Ovechkin is already up to 32 years old, but he’s playing like he could go for another ten years. He hasn’t shown any sign of slowing down, and is putting up monster numbers again in 2017-18. Note that Ovechkin currently has 22 goals and 13 assists, which is putting him on pace to have another whopping goal total. The team may have been stale to open the year, but Ovechkin has been providing through, he just needed some help. The Caps have averaged 3.8 goals per game in their last ten. They’ve scored 5 in each of their last two games, and at least 4 in seven of ten games.

The goals against has also come down, with 2.4 goals allowed in their last ten, compared to 2.9 overall. Holtby certainly needs some more time to find his element, though. He comes in with a 2.66 GAA and 0.918 save percentage. I expect those numbers to improve, but it’s been an atypical season for him thus far. I could see the Ducks running into a rut here after playing in a physical contest against the Blues. This really isn’t the team they wanted to see after winning a big game. There is no time to take a breather, and it’s on the road no less. The Capitals have been on fire, and I don’t see it stopping against the Ducks.
