Edmonton Oilers vs. Colorado Avalanche Pick – NHL March 21, 2022

The Edmonton Oilers and Colorado Avalanche are in action at Ball Arena on Monday evening. This should be a good one between two entertaining hockey clubs.

If you are looking for a fun game to watch tonight, the Oilers and Avalanche should do it. The Oilers are coming off a 6-3 win over the New Jersey Devils on Saturday.

The sharp performance was the fifth win in a row for the Oilers. Prior to that win, the Oilers pulled away from the Buffalo Sabres for a 6-1 win.

How about a 4-3 win over the Capitals, 4-1 over the Lightning, and 7-5 win against the Detroit Red Wings? Not too shabby for the Oilers.

It’s just hard to trust the Oilers, though. At any moment, the Oilers could go cold and the frustration builds. Before the five wins, the Oilers had a three-game losing streak and losses in six of their previous eight attempts.

The Oilers enter Denver with a record of 35-23-4 and 74 points. They are third in the Pacific Division, with a ten-game deficit behind the Calgary Flames.

Colorado is atop the Central Division with a record of 44-13-5 and 93 points. With a 16-point lead on the second-place St. Louis Blues, the Avalanche are ahead and clear.

The Flames are staying within reach of the No. 1 seed at 38-16-8 and 84 points, but it’s going to be tough to play catch up. While the Avs look good, regular season success doesn’t always translate in the playoffs, though.

Oilers vs. Avalanche Prediction:

This has the makings of an up and down hockey game at Ball Arena tonight. There haven’t been many teams that have been able to stop the Avalanche offense this season.

It’s like the Oilers are going to have to press all night to pull off the upset. The Avalanche lead the NHL with an average of 3.8 goals scored per game. There aren’t any deficiencies with this team on the ice.

They put a lot of pressure on the net, 35 shots per game for the fifth-best in the NHL, and then sixth on the power play with a success rate of 24.4%. Unfortunately for the Oilers, the Avalanche are on fire at home.

There has been no stopping the Avalanche at Ball Arena. They have scored 4.1 goals per game with an average of 37.5 shots a game on net.

I don’t foresee the Avalanche struggling to put the puck behind Mike Smith. Smith is listed as probable to start in the crease for the Oilers.

Edmonton Oilers vs. Colorado Avalanche Betting Trends:

  • 5-0 overall in their previous five games
  • 4-9 overall in their previous 13 games as an underdog
  • OVER is 5-1 in their previous six games on one-day rest
  • OVER is 4-1 in their previous five games after a win
  • OVER is 4-0 in their previous four games after their opponent scores 5 or more goals
  • 7-0 overall in their previous seven games on two-day rest
  • 13-3 overall in their previous 16 games on a Monday
  • 44-8 overall in their previous 52 games at home
  • OVER is 6-2 in their previous eight games on two-day rest
  • OVER is 14-6-3 in their previous 23 games after scoring 5 or more goals

The Oilers will be required to get their forwards attacking in this one. That doesn’t have to be said to Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. These two are always looking to score.

With two of the most dangerous forwards in the NHL, the Oilers can’t waste their careers. It would be one of the biggest failures of all time if the Oilers can’t do anything with them.

The Oilers are seventh in the NHL in goal scoring with 3.4 goals per game. They’ve been just as dangerous as the Avalanche on the power play, with a strike rate of 25.3% for the fourth-best unit in the league.

I’m leaning towards a game of the higher scoring variety. There should be plenty of Grade A scoring chances. I’m backing the OVER on the total at Ball Arena.
