What is up with this NHL schedule? It’s really irritating. Last night there were seven games on the card and tonight there are only two games, on a Tuesday. I can understand the NHL not wanting to go up against MNF, but why are there only two games tonight? Seems to me two games should have been last night and not tonight. It is like this all season long with the confusing scheduling. I’m not sure who is making it up, but they should be fired, I don’t recall it being this awry. And that is my rant for the night. Oh wait, I have a small rant regarding football this weekend, where a winless Sunday was separated by 1 point in two games and 2 points in another game. I can understand not getting frustrated in hockey where totals are low, but when you miss by a point in football games it can be frustrating.
On to tonight, where again, there are only two games on the schedule. We have the Dallas Stars playing host to the Ottawa Senators and in California the Flames are visiting the Ducks. Tonight I’m going to Anaheim for the Flames and Ducks. This is a rematch of last seasons playoff series between the two squads. How things have changed, both the Flames and Ducks are struggling mightily. The Flames had a surprise year last season, the Ducks were the Ducks. Now here this season the Flames are being the team we thought they were a year ago, and the Ducks are looking like the Anaheim Mighty Ducks.
I note the Mighty Ducks era for when they wore the Disney jerseys. Those were the days, when Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne were leading the way in Anaheim. Good players, just not good teams. This season the Ducks haven’t looked like a good team at all. It is a little perplexing to figure out. Corey Perry? Check. Ryan Getzlaf? Check. Ryan Kesler? Check. Two of the three have been struggling, which is at the root of their issues. Getzlaf enters tonight with only 1 goal and 8 assists. Kesler has been particularly bad, with 1 goal and 6 assists and a putrid +/- of -10. In other words, he’s been a major liability and not helping out at all. You have to figure they have a breakout game coming up, right? We’ll see if it happens tonight against the Flames.
Calgary Flames vs. Anaheim Ducks NHL Pick
A 7-10-3-1 start for the Ducks has been a bit starling and their record at home has gotten my attention as well. This is a team that took months for them to lose 5 games at home. It felt like the snow was starting to melt and the Ducks still weren’t giving up anything at home. This season they’re only a game above .500. There are teams where you wait and wait for them to turn their years around, and in some instances, that turnaround never happens. They have averaged just 1.79 goals per game. However, they have been showing signs of getting better. In their last ten they have scored 2.30 goals a game, not good by any means, but at this point they just have to show signs of improvement.
The Flames have been one of the worst defensive teams in the NHL this season. They are ranked 30th in the NHL, last in goals against, with 3.52 surrendered per game. The Ducks have historically scored the puck on the Flames. Note in the last ten games they scored 4 goals per game. They didn’t score less than 3 goals in any of them. Between the Flames and Ducks, they averaged 6.7 goals per game in the last ten meetings. Only once was there less than 5 goals scored. I’ll take a play on the OVER 5.
PICK: OVER 5 GOALS (-125)
