The Dallas Stars return home with a win after getting quite close to opening the season at 0-4-0. They opened the year in a close battle against the Boston Bruins, which ultimately resulted in a 2-1 loss. It was more of the same in the next two games, as the Stars fell by a goal against the Blues and Red Wings.
The most gut-wrenching loss had to be against the Red Wings on Sunday evening. Up 2-0, they allowed the Red Wings to strut right back into the game and down them by a score of 4-3. That’s not how the Stars are built. A 2-goal lead should indicate lockdown time defensively. Ben Bishop had the night off, so that may have contributed to the meltdown, though.
Dallas were in desperation mode when they went to Washington. They just about allowed 2 points to get away from them again. With a 3-2 lead late in regulation, the Capitals found the back of the net on a Nicklas Backstrom snipe with 30 seconds left in the game. The good vibes in Washington were short lived, though, as Tyler Seguin netted a feed from Alex Radulov on a 2-on-1 break in overtime. Ovechkin coughed the puck up, which resulted in the Stars breaking free to the other side of the rink.
Braden Holtby had no chance as he was sprawled out on the ice trying to get over to defend Seguin’s shot. For as good as Ovechkin is offensively, he does like to cough the puck up going into the attacking zone. It was a big win by the Stars, who needed a win for some confidence. That might be the game that gets this team going. The Stars welcome a worthy opponent to Dallas, as the Calgary Flames will begin a three-game road trip Thursday night. The Flames are coming off a similar game against the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday night. They had to come from behind to tie the game up late just like the Capitals. And like the Stars-Capitals game, the team who blew the lead were able to regroup and win the game in overtime. The Flames fell on a laser by Drew Doughty to end the contest before going to a shootout.
While the Kings were the winners, the Flames out shot the Kings, 40-29. Jonathan Quick did his best to keep the Kings in the game. With the loss, the Flames have a win and two losses on the season. They were fortunate to get a point against the Kings. Having said that, the Flames will likely put a nice season together. As far as tonight is concerned, they have a tough matchup on the road against the Stars this evening.
The Stars may have just one win on their 2019-20 thus far, but each of their loss ahs come by 1 goal. It isn’t like they’ve been out of any game, even against the defending Stanley Cup Champions and Boston Bruins. There’s no excuse for the effort in Detroit, but Bishop will be in net against the Flames tonight. This isn’t a team that the Flames have liked to see on their schedule in recent memory.
Note that the Stars are on a six-game win streak over the Flames. Along with six straight wins, they’re 8-2 in their previous ten matchups dating back to 2016. Dallas swept their three-game regular season series in 2018-19. The Flames are also 1-4 in their previous five games in Dallas. With momentum on their side from the win in Washington, look for the Stars to get their first win in front of the home crowd Thursday.
