Yesterday was a full day of NHL action starting in the early afternoon. Saturday features another full slate of hockey action on the ice. It’s a big day for college football, lots of rivalry games, but a big day of hockey is on the docket, too. I’m getting totally frustrated with the late game shenanigans that haven’t gone in my favor lately. It hasn’t failed, less than 3 minutes to go in a game, there will be a goal against us. A couple of them have resulted in pushes so of course it could have been worse, but there are bad beats and then there are bad pushes. Yesterday the Predators scored a late goal with around 2 minutes left to tie it up at 2-2 only to lose in overtime. An empty netter we would have been fine, but the Preds were able to get the tying goal and picking up a point in the process by heading to overtime.
I’m looking at the Philadelphia Flyers again today. Even though they took the Predators yesterday, they still aren’t a very good team. They looked pretty good yesterday, I’ll give them that. If you beat the Predators you probably had a good day at the office. However, they have a couple of good teams back-to-back. After knocking the Predators off yesterday afternoon, they need to come back this afternoon for a meeting with the Rangers. That is no fun, and it shouldn’t be easy either. The Rangers are coming off a pretty poor effort against the Montreal Canadiens, losing to them by a score of 5-1. Henrik Lundqvist had the worst start of the season. Even the best have bad games, so I don’t see that as any kind of negative reflection on Henrik. He’ll be fine and the Rangers will be fine. They won a competition off the ice recently, being announced the most valuable team in the NHL financially. We will see if they can come back strong against the Flyers today. Note the early afternoon start.
Philadelphia Flyers vs. N.Y. Rangers NHL Pick
The Flyers won yesterday, but they are still dead last in the NHL in scoring. 2 goals per game in regulation yesterday bests their season average of 1.78 goals scored per game. So 3 goals in total was an onslaught for the Flyers. On defense the Flyers are giving up 2.82 goals per game. Scoring on the Rangers should be difficult today. Henrik and the Rangers are coming off a bad game defensively, but do you see Lundqvist having bad games in consecutive starts? Especially against the offense of the Flyers, who are coming off a game yesterday. I don’t see it, I think the Rangers play a good game today.
The Rangers are 1st in the NHL in goals against with 2 allowed per game. So what we have is the worst offense in the league against the best defense. I think the situation of the Flyers coming off an overtime win yesterday plays into the favor of the Rangers as well. Further, the Rangers just got embarrassed by the Canadiens. This looks like a good spot for them to bounce back. I like the Rangers today and I like them to win this one by at least a goal over the Flyers. I see good value with the price.
PICK: RANGERS -1.5 (+150)
