The Carolina Hurricanes looked like a top NHL offense in their last game. Problem is it was against the Sabres, a team that makes the worst offenses look like world beaters. Tonight they are going to get a stingier test against the St. Louis Blues on the road. They’re going to need to carry over that performance from the other night into tonight against the Blues. The Blues are going to present much more of a test on defense than the Sabres offered up. St. Louis has been playing good hockey lately, winning three straight games heading into Saturday night against the Hurricanes. At 25-13-1-2, the Blues are in a great position to make the playoffs again. They got ousted by the Blackhawks last year in the first round after a horrible stretch at the end of the season. We’ll see if they can keep the momentum going late into this season instead of collapsing again. The Blues were a team with serious injury problems, so I will give them that. We’ll see what happens tonight when they welcome an inferior Carolina team to St. Louis.
I didn’t have a pick last night. My latest pick dates back to Thursday where our wager was looking great after the 1st period. The Hurricanes and Sabres played to a 0-0 tie after 1. We had the two worst offenses in the NHL exiting the 1st period with no score. It was looking like money all the way. They then exploded for 5 goals in the 2nd period. How often are you going to get the Hurricanes and Sabres go for 5 goals in a period? Not often and highly unlikely. Let’s see how they fare tonight against the Blues, and let’s see if we can pick up a winner in the NHL for Saturday.
Carolina Hurricanes @ St. Louis Blues
The Hurricanes ultimately won that game, 5-2, against the Sabres. They were in their own arena in that one, but this time they’ll have to take matters on the road against one of the best home teams in the league. This is an important point in this game. Note that the Canes are only 4-16-1-1 playing on the road. Conversely, the Blues are a solid 14-4-0-1 entering tonights game. Not only did the Blues win their last three games, but they did it in convincing fashion in each matchup. They scored 7, 6, and 7 goals for an average of 6.6 goals per game. On defense the Blues were strong as well, allowing only 4 goals in those three games. That works out for an average of 1.3 goals against. Overall this season the Blues have been better on offense, they are scoring at a rate of 3.12 goals a game, which amounts to 4th in the NHL. Defensively they are among the top teams in the league as well, allowing 2.41 goals per game, 8th in the NHL.
The Hurricanes, despite scoring 5 goals last game, have had tremendous issues on the offensive end. The Canes are 29th in scoring with 2 goals per game. In the previous nine games leading up to that 5 goal outburst, the Hurricanes didn’t score more than 2 goals in any game. I don’t like their chances against the Blues tonight. They got their scoring exhibition out of the way against the Sabres, and should look like a terrible offense again tonight. The Blues should win this game by at least a goal, so I am taking them on the -1.5
