I thought I was looking at a typo when I noticed a score of 0-0 on my phone while I was out last night. It wasn’t a typo, the Leafs and Penguins were at 0-0 with less than 10 minutes left in the 2nd period. I thought if there was going to be a lost bet in this game it was going to be from a bad beat, but it was just a straight up loss on the OVER. Sometimes results make no sense, and the first goal of the game happening deep in the 2nd period made no sense. That’ll happen. The Penguins ended up bouncing back after their winning streak was snapped against the Rangers a few nights ago. It ended the Leafs mini-streak. If the Leaf won that game I think fans would have started planning the parade route downtown Toronto. The Leafs put up a pretty solid effort, but it just wasn’t enough tonight.
For Saturday’s night pick we take a look at the Boston Bruins playing host to the Carolina Hurricanes in Boston. The Bruins looked like they were righting the ship in the right direction following five straight wins, but then dropped two in a row in decisive fashion, 6-1 to the Leaf and 5-1 to the Canadiens. In either game were they competitive at all and for the most part looked disinterested in being there. After losing those two on their Canadian road trip, the Bruins look to come back on Saturday night with a victory over the Carolina Hurricanes at home. It is still early in the season and I feel confident in saying they will get into a rhythm. Let’s see if they can put those two unfortunate losses in the rear-view mirror and come back strong Saturday night.
Carolina Hurricanes @ Boston Bruins
It might not show it yet, but by seasons end I think the Bruins will be one of the better home teams in the NHL. Last season they were 31-7-3 at home which made them the best in the league. This year already they’re three games away from matching their seven game loss record, as they are at 6-4 now. I expect them to return to dominant form, and it should start tonight against a ‘Canes team that been abysmal on the road thus far this season. Carolina holds a record of 5-7-3 with only one of those wins coming on the road. They enter Saturday night with a 1-5 record playing away from home. The Bruins, who are generally a powerhouse at home, should be able to overmatch the Hurricanes here. In the Hurricanes last four games on the road they’ve given up an average of 4.75 goals. Note that two of those games were against the Oilers and Flames, not exactly offensive powerhouses.
Prior to those two losses against the Leafs and Canadiens, the Bruins were rolling. Winners of 5 in a row, averaging 3.6 goals per game and 1.8 against, Boston looked to be turning the corner after a shaky start, and they still may be. I think they get back to winning ways after two embarrassments in Canada. The Bruins are too good of a team to struggle three games in a row, especially at home. A final score of 4-1 or 4-2 looks realistic for the Bruins. I’m going to bypass the juicy ML and take them to win by more than a goal at a VERY attractive price of +162.
