The Detroit Red Wings return home with their first win of the year in their back pocket. The Red Wings edged out the Florida Panthers in overtime by a score of 4-3. The Panthers tied it up at 3 late, but Gustav Nyquist prevented them from getting an extra point. It was a perfect opportunity for the Red Wings, as they were able to catch the Panthers on a back-to-back after a huge win in Washington against the Capitals.
They went to overtime in that one as well, so it was a couple of long nights for the Panthers. Despite the win, the Red Wings were still outshot 37-31. It wasn’t a good start either, with the Panthers getting out to a 2-0 lead in the 1st period. They just stopped playing after believing the game was in the bag. After playing the night before, it was easy for the Panthers to want to slack off.
The Hurricanes head on the road after dropping a 3-1 decision to the Avalanche on Saturday. They didn’t look like the better team in that game and didn’t deserve a win. It made for their third loss in a row following four wins in a row for the Hurricanes. The Canes will have a nice three-day break before hosting the Sharks on Friday. So, there aren’t any excuses for them to come out flat against the Wings tonight. With their first win, the Red Wings moved to 1-5-1 on the year. Amid a rebuilding era in Detroit, it’s going to be difficult for them to gain any momentum from this, though. We’ll see if they can at least generate some momentum for tonight against the Hurricanes. Carolina Hurricanes vs. Detroit Red Wings Pick
The Hurricanes’ offence was flying to start the season. They were lighting the red light on fire with 21 goals through their first four games. Variance hit them pretty hard, as they’ve scored just 4 goals in their last three games since going on that tear to open the season. They weren’t going to continue at that torrid pace, so it was due for them to hit a wall offensively.
The Hurricanes will be heading into Detroit on a three-game losing streak, with losses against the Jets, Lightning, and Avalanche. The Canes have lost the last two against the Red Wings, but the Wings have progressively gotten worse from last season. Despite the victory over the Panthers, the offence has been anemic, and the defence might even be worse.
The Red Wings enter with an average of 2.38 goals per game for 26th in the NHL. Their win against the Panthers was the first time this season that they eclipsed the 3-goal mark. For a year that has had crazy scoring in the first month of the season, the Red Wings have been struggling to get by with a roster led by Gustav Nyquist and Dylan Larkin. Conversely, they are allowing 4.38 goals per game for 31st in the NHL.
It took overtime against a team who were coming off a big win over the Capitals the night before to get their first W. After losing three-straight, I don’t believe the Hurricanes will take the Wings lightly tonight. Also, don’t underestimate the return of Petr Mrazek to Detroit. The Wings gave up on him, so expect for him to find some motivation in net. The Hurricanes should be able to grab a 3-2 or 4-2 win at Little Caesars Arena in downtown Detroit on Monday night.
