Islanders vs. Blackhawks Pick – NHL March 17th

The New York Islanders and Chicago Blackhawks meet tonight in a battle that features two teams that are planning on making noise this playoff season. The Hawks revitalization era featuring Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane has made them no strangers to playoff season. With another great team heading into the post-season, the Blackhawks figure to make another major impact. They have a defense that has consistently ranked in the top 5 all season, often holding the top spot for part of the season. They are familiar with the territory that comes with playing in the playoffs. Their core is still young enough to make an impact and they have the experience that comes in handy in about a month time. The Blackhawks’ opponents tonight, the Islanders, are definite newcomers to the playoff scene. After years of suffering, the Isles are in the spotlight with a lineup that includes the ever dynamic John Tavares. The Islanders are a prime example of an organization that has made all of the right decisions when they were going through their struggles on the ice. Leafs, you watching?

Just a frustrating loss last night. The Kings got on the board in the 2nd period to make it a 1-0 game, but that is all we got out of both teams. They were unable to add an insurance goal, so the -1.5 bet loss. Leading up to the drop of the puck, I seen odds on the Kings that got up to -400. No way can anybody justify laying a price like that. It paid off last night, but constantly laying juice like that will eat the bankroll up, or completely obliterate it. More than ever any year before, I have seen so many highly juiced games which essentially makes a lot of games unbettable. Look it tonight, where the Boston Bruins are -500 favorites over the Buffalo Sabres!

N.Y. Islanders @ Chicago Blackhawks

The Blackhawks have long been once of the most well-rounded teams in the NHL. With names like Pat Kane and Toews, it easy to anoint their offense as the heart and soul of their roster. But in fact, it has been the opposite. Mind you the offense is still quite good, but it most certainly lags behind what the defense has been able to do for the Blackhawks. This season has been no exception. For a team to make it deep it usually comes down to one of two things: a stifling defense, and or a hot goalie. The Hawks have both potentially working in their favor. This season the Blackhawks are allowing only 2.26 goals per game. That works out to 3rd in the NHL for Chicago. The Blackhawks have gone 35-23 to the UNDER this season, which leads to evidence of them being a defensive minded squad.

The Islanders are actually favoring the UNDER to at 36-34. A stronger defense in the second-half of the season stabilized that number significantly. This is traditionally a series that goes UNDER as well. In their last four times playing one another, the UNDER went 4-0. A larger sample size yields a result of 5-1 to the UNDER. Additionally, the UNDER is 3-0 in the Isles last three games, and for the Blackhawks 5-2 in their last seven. A 3-2 win for the Hawks, giving the odds, looks on point for this game. Thus, betting the UNDER 5.5 makes sense.
