Islanders vs. Rangers Pick – NHL October 14th

Yesterday was easy as they’ll come on the ice. There was no doubt we were cashing in a winner from the start. The Ducks trounced the Sabres, easily getting by them by a score of 5-1. The only thing I did wrong with that bet is not put more on it. I still can’t believe the books afforded us such a nice price on the Ducks. I’ll take that any day of the week with one of the best in the NHL going against the worst. You’re only as good as your last bet, or so they say, so lets pick up another winner in this young NHL season today. With a handful of games already in the books, teams are beginning to get their skates underneath of them and shaking off the rust. It isn’t a time to be declaring the pretenders and contenders, so I think there are many opportunities for soft lines.

N.Y. Islanders @ New York Rangers

The New York Islanders have long been the little brother to the Rangers in New York. The Rangers have the history and wins to show for it, along with a Stanley Cup appearance a season ago. The Isles have made several strides in the right direction the last two years, and are hoping to put it all together in the 2014-15 season. The question is will they have enough to take over as the best team in New York. I believe they are some years off from that, but John Tavares may have something to say about that. Tavares exited last season early with an injury, but is off to a nice start this year, potting a goal and 4 assists already. The Islanders will get their offense. However, I am really worried about the defense on this team. They’ve given up 3 goals in each game thus far, although, they are 2-0. But such a liability in the defensive department will produce losses for them. The Islanders were 28th in the NHL last season, averaging 3.18 goals against. I don’t see it getting any better, and in fact, they may be worse off. They will score, so don’t be surprised if I come back in the future betting OVERs in Islander games.

The Rangers’ defense has been getting ripped thus far, allowing 4.33 goals a game. Lundqvist has been off to a slow start no doubt, but I expect them to improve significantly. It is still early, and the Rangers still have one of the better defensive units in the NHL. After getting taken for 6 goals against the Maple Leafs, I expect a much better effort out of the Rangers tonight. Expect to see the same team that was 4th in the NHL, giving up 2.32 goals a game. The Isles are off to a 2-0 start with both wins coming against the Hurricanes, while the Rangers are 1-2. So, this will be only the second team the Islanders have played this season. Kind of odd scheduling, but it is what it is. Look for the Rangers to come out strong, which I imagine, they still have a sour taste in their mouth after getting dispatched by the Leafs easily Sunday. The Islanders problems on defense this season are true to themselves, the Rangers, I think it is just a bad couple of games. Note the Islanders are 3-9 playing at Madison Square Garden in recent memory, and the Rangers are 10-4 against them overall. They will bounce back. And I think they bounce back tonight, take the Rangers.
