The Detroit Red Wings, still searching for their second win of the season, will welcome the Jets of Winnipeg at Little Caesars Arena on Friday night. Their lone win was a 4-3 win over the Panthers in overtime. Mind you that was a game where the Panthers were coming off a wild win over the Washington Capitals the night before. So, the situation set up perfectly for the Red Wings to steal a game in Florida.
This was after the Wings got behind by 2 goals in the 1st period, before the Panthers just sat down and stopped playing. They are on the heels of another loss, this time a 3-1 loss to the Hurricanes in Detroit on Monday. Again, a team with a nice break between games. It’s happened pretty often this season, for better or worse.
The Red Wings are down in the dumps, while the Jets are coming off a year in which they went to the Western Conference Final. It was only them and the Vegas Golden Knights in their way and we all know what happened there. The winner of the Stanley Cup ultimately ended up coming out of the Eastern Conference.
Paul Stastny moved to Las Vegas to play with the Knights this season, but there is still a lot of talent on the current roster that will take them far again in 2018-19. I don’t know if the duplicate what they did a season ago, it was a magical ride, but they should be in the mix to stage another run. Patrik Laine has been kind of quiet so far this season with 3 goals and 2 assists. Expect him to get going, though, and with that the team as well. Head below for our free Jets vs. Red Wings pick.
Winnipeg Jets vs. Detroit Red Wings Pick
It wasn’t expected to be easy for the Red Wings this season, but I don’t think many people thought it’d be this ugly of a start for them. With a 1-6-1-1 to the season, the Wings find themselves in last place in the league and there doesn’t appear to be any relief in sight. Following this meeting with the Jets, they welcome the Stars to their building on Sunday. The Red Wings will win some games this season, albeit it’s likely not going to be many.
Jimmy Howard is doing his best in net to keep games competitive, but with a lack of support, it’s been difficult to get into a groove. He has a 3.23 GAA and 0.907 save percentage thus far. Howard has had to face an average of 34.1 shots per game. The team is allowing an average of 4.22 goals per game, while scoring only 2.22 goals per game. That makes for an ugly formula to success.
Winnipeg are coming off a 4-2 loss after they won three in a row, including at least 4 goals in those three outings. They were on a streak of at least 4 goals in four games in a row before the Maple Leafs ended that streak. The Jets are scoring an average of 3.1 goals per game in 2018-19.
Hellebuyck got hit for 4 goals against the Leafs. A Vezina favourite in the preseason, Hellebuyck has been pedestrian between the pipes with a 2.99 GAA and 0.907 save percentage. Laurent Brossoit has been sharp in relief of Hellebuyck, with a 2.00GAA and 0.955 save percentage. Whether the Jets go back to Hellebuyck tonight or opt for Brossoit, it may not matter against an anemic Detroit offence. The Wings are 28th in scoring and 31st defensively, hence only one win on their resume. The Jets should be able to bounce back against an inferior opponent after getting stopped by the Maple Leafs in their previous outing.
