Leafs vs. Jets Pick – NHL January 3rd

The Lightning and Penguins lit the lamp up yesterday early and often. They went to the 1st intermission with the Pens up 3-1, giving us only two goals to be scored the rest of the way for the bet to hit. The Penguins ultimately won the contest by a score of 6-3, so the OVER comfortably cashed for us. That is one series that has consistently seen a lot of goals, a trend worth nothing in future meetings. The only thing I didn’t quite understand was the price that the odds makers set out. I got the OVER 5.5 at -101 and surely thought that should have been around -120 given the history between these two teams. I am definitely not complaining, and I am happy we could take advantage of a misfire by the sportsbooks. It was almost like the price posted was a mistake. If things go according to plan, though, we should be seeing the Lightning and Penguins meeting in the playoffs this season. How often do things go according to plan in the NHL, though? It seems feasible they are the last two standing in the Eastern Conference, but the NHL playoffs have a funny way of making sure what makes most sense doesn’t happen.

If you want to talk about trends, this is a series that has one glaring trend that has been continually cashing in as well. Tonight we take a look at the Toronto Maple Leafs and Winnipeg Jets who will me meeting in Winnipeg. An uncharacteristic road game for the Leafs on a Saturday night, but they will be staying in Canada for this tilt with the Jets. The Leafs lost to the Minnesota Wild last night, 3-1. They will now have to fly all the way out to Winnipeg to face the Jets. This could be a difficult test for the Leafs, who are losers of their last 6 games in 10 attempts. They didn’t play well against the Wild last night, but will have an immediate opportunity to redeem themselves. We’ll see how it’ll unfold tonight. Let’s win some money.

Toronto Maple Leafs @ Winnipeg Jets

The Jets started the season out as a team that weren’t scoring any goals and they weren’t allowing any goals in against. However, in the last month or so, that trend has begun to shift in both directions. They are now scoring some more, and are letting in goals. The Jets were previously 1st in the NHL in goals against, now they have slid back to 7th place, where they are allowing in 2.33 goals per game. In their last three games they’ve given up an average of more than 3 goals game. However, they have been scoring the puck, as they were scoring more than 3 goals per game.

Looking at the Leafs, this is a team that has a history of allowing the Jets to score goals on them. Toronto has a poor defense, so most squads do find it easy to score on them, but the Jets do it particularly well. In their last four games the Jets have scored 5, 5, 5, 4 goals on the Leafs. In 7 of their last 10 meetings the Jets have scored 3 or more goals on Toronto. The Leafs can score too though, as they are 1st in the NHL in scoring, averaging 3.23 goals a game. The OVER has successfully hit in four straight games between the Jets and Leafs. Look for it to be another winner on Saturday night.
