The Florida Panthers took care of business last night against the Edmonton Oilers. The Oilers were never really a threat for the Panthers, who took a 4-2 victory to Winnipeg with them for Tuesday. The Panthers are on the midst of a tough Canadian road trip out west, but have handled it well. Florida is now a perfect 4-0 in Canada and are 5-1 on their road trip. They won’t be heading home just yet, as they’ll take on the Jets Tuesday. This is a gruelling road trip for the Panthers but they are continuing to produce results. These stretches of the season are usually the most difficult for teams, and really test whether they are competitors and belong in the playoffs or aren’t for real. Don’t look now but the Panthers are a 20 win team. If Luongo continues to play at a high level then they may very well make it into the playoffs this season. For the Oilers they are already looking towards next season and beyond. They should be the owners of the first overall pick in the NHL draft.
Tonight we take a look at the Tampa Bay Lightning and Philadelphia Flyers who will square up against one another in Philadelphia tonight. Not a big card, although I am going to go and look for a winner in this one tonight. The Flyers have found themselves in another rut following three straight wins. After that three game win streak, the Flyers went on a five game losing streak. They’ve now lost six of their last eight games. They are now going to be without their starting goalie for up to two weeks. Steve Mason will be absent due to a leg injury that has been bothering him considerably. It will be the Ray Emery show in Philadelphia as a result of the injury to Mason. Emery has a GAA of 3.21 so there is some work to be done to make up for no Mason on the ice. Let’s see how Emery and the rest of the Flyers do tonight, as they welcome one of the NHL’s finest rosters to their house Monday night.
Tampa Bay Lightning @ Philadelphia Flyers
The Lightning have really been hot all year, but have been especially hot of late. Tampa is currently winners in seven of their last eight games. With a record of 27-12-0-4 the Lightning have one of the most potent lineups in all hockey. However, if there is anywhere they are susceptible it would be on the road. They’re 16-4-0-1 at home but only 11-8-0-3 on the road. The only place the Flyers have been able to win has been at home, coming into tonight with a record of 10-6-0-3 in Philadelphia. Note though, the Lightning have won six straight games over the Flyers. Two of those wins came in Philadelphia. The Lightning are 1st in the NHL scoring, potting 3.23 goals per game. They are also 10th in goals against, averaging 2.49 goals allowed.
As I alluded to earlier, the Flyers will be without their starting goaltender tonight, Steve Mason. Mason provided a GAA of 2.47 for the Flyers, but will have to settle with Ray Emery and his 3.21 GAA. Emery is best known for his days in Ottawa. The better days of his career are long behind him, and will have to contend with the best offense in the NHL tonight. The Lightning and Flyers were on a four game OVER streak before that ended in their last game. However, the OVER is still 6-2-2 in their last ten meetings. I feel with Emery in net the Lightning should be able to take advantage of it, and we get back to a high scoring game between the Lightning and Flyers. I am playing the OVER 5.5 with a lean to the Lightning for tonight.
