Lightning vs. Penguins Pick – NHL January 2nd

The Washington Capitals edged the Chicago Blackhawks out yesterday afternoon in the NHL Winter Classic by scoring a late goal to earn the 3-2 win. I only complain about officiating when it is completely erroneous, and I think the Capitals got that goal off a cheap call from the refs. Although, I mainly blame the Blackhawks for this loss. They had their chances to blow this game open. They had a two-man advantage in the 2nd period, but were unable to take advantage of that. You need to score a goal anytime you are presented with such a glorious opportunity. Following that point, Chicago really never had their feet underneath them. They looked sluggish and slow, and as a result were never really able to get any offense going. The Capitals looked slow as well, but they were able to take advantage at the end of regulation. We were playing roulette at that point, we had black, and the ball landed on red. I was able to turn a pretty nice profit with my college football picks yesterday. I hope you tailed me on those.

In what has become a battle of two of the best teams the NHL has to offer, the Pittsburgh Penguins and Tampa Bay Lightning meet for a match of the NHL elite. The Pens enter 1st in the Metropolitan and the Lightning 1st in the Atlantic. There is only 1 point that separates the Penguins and Lightning. Tampa overtook the lead in the Eastern Conference after they demolished the Buffalo Sabres. The Lightning will have a stingier test on their hands tonight, as they play visitors to the Penguins. You are going to find some of the best players in the NHL in action tonight in this game, including Sidney Crosby and Steven Stamkos. Let’s try and find some money in this one, as it should be an entertaining matchup between the Penguins and Lightning.

Tampa Bay Lightning @ Pittsburgh Penguins

This is the third meeting this season between these two clubs. They enter this game with a split of those two games. The Penguins knocked the Lightning off in their first meeting, 4-2. A week later the Lightning came back to return the favor in a 4-3 victory. These are the kind of games we expect when they meet. Competitive games that come down to a play here or there. Both of these teams hold powerful offenses that can put the puck in the net with great frequency. The Lightning are 2nd in the NHL in scoring averaging 3.23 goals per game. They ripped through the Sabres for 5 goals the other night. The Penguins aren’t far behind the Lightning in that department, as they are scoring an average of 2.95 goals a game for 6th in the NHL.

The Pens have a solid defensive team all season, but have shown signs of slowing down of late. They did shut a bad Hurricanes offense down in their last time on the ice, but allowed 4, 4, 3, and 3 goals prior to that. This is a series that has a tendency of flying over the total. The over has hit in three straight games. Additionally the OVER is 9-1 the last ten times the Lightning and Penguins have met. In there were several totals of 6, too. With these dynamic offenses the OVER should be able to hit once again. I like that bet, and that is what I’m going to lay down for tonight in the NHL.

Pick – OVER 5.5 GOALS (-101) @ (Best Odds)
